The new live-action Moana will stay true to the original, but it’s also bringing something new to the table. Not only will we get all the epic adventure and powerful messages we loved in the first film, but we’ll see Moana brought to life by a real actress—finally!

Plus, the movie will fully embrace its Pacific Island roots, ensuring the culture and stories are represented with care. That means a cast that’s not only talented but also authentic. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.

What’s the Live-Action Moana About?

First things first: the live-action Moana isn’t going to stray far from the original movie’s plot. We’re talking about the same epic adventure where Moana sets sail across the ocean to restore the Heart of Te Fiti and save her people.

She’s still defying her father’s wishes, battling powerful forces, and proving that she’s brave enough to follow her heart. But the coolest part is that the live-action version will probably add a fresh twist here and there.

While Disney hasn’t revealed too much about what’s different, we know that the remake will highlight Moana’s journey of self-discovery in a way that feels even more real with a live cast and stunning visuals.

And don’t worry, your favorite characters will be back! Moana’s quest to restore the Heart of Te Fiti and find her way as a voyager will still be front and center.

Who’s Directing the Live-Action Moana?

The director of the new live-action Moana is Thomas Kail, and if that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the genius behind Hamilton—the musical that took Broadway by storm. Kail is known for bringing big ideas to life with a ton of heart, and we’re betting he’ll bring that same energy to Moana’s story as well.

Before Hamilton, Kail worked on live TV events like Grease Live and the Hulu series We Were the Lucky Ones. So, yeah, the director knows how to handle a huge production. He’s also worked with some of the best talent out there, like Lin-Manuel Miranda (who’s doing the music for the live-action film too).

Disney has done an excellent job selecting actors who not only have the talent but also the cultural roots to bring these characters to life. The role of Moana will be played by Catherine Laga’aia, an Australian actress with strong Pacific Island heritage. She’s beyond excited to take on the role and represent her culture. Laga’aia told PEOPLE:

I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites. My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.

Joining her on this adventure is Dwayne Johnson as Maui. Yes, the Rock is back, bringing his signature charm and energy to the role. He’ll be just as charismatic and hilarious as ever. The rest of the cast is filled with other talented Pacific Island actors, including John Tui as Chief Tui (Moana’s dad), Frankie Adams as Sina (Moana’s mom), and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.

Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated movie, won’t be reprising the title role in the live-action version, but she’s still involved as an executive producer and will help guide the casting. In fact, Cravalho has said on Instagram that she’s honored to ‘pass the baton’ to the next Moana and can’t wait to see the character represented by someone who shares her heritage.

First Look of the Live-Action Moana—What Does It Look Like?

In a recent behind-the-scenes shot, Dwayne Johnson was seen on set in Hawaii, fully decked out as Maui. And let’s just say, he’s looking so good in the role. The Rock rocking Maui’s famous tattoos, his long hair, and, of course, his huge magical hook.

It’s everything we imagined Maui would look like in live-action, and we are here for it. But what really caught our attention were the boats. If you remember the original movie, you know that Moana’s journey across the ocean involves her setting sail in a traditional Polynesian canoe.

In the live-action remake, the boats are going to be real. That’s right—Disney is building real, life-sized boats for the movie instead of relying solely on CGI. That’s a huge win for us because it means the world of Moana is going to feel more tangible and immersive.

Moana’s costume, too, is looking pretty on point. She’ll be slaying her signature red crop top and beige skirt, just like in the original film. But what’s still up in the air is Pua, her adorable pet pig. We haven’t spotted him on set yet, so it’s safe to say he’ll probably be CGI’d in—much like the animals in The Lion King remake.

When is the Live-Action Moana Coming Out?

The official release date is July 10, 2026. Filming began in summer 2024, so expect more behind-the-scenes photos and updates over the next couple of months. But don’t worry—you won’t have to wait too long for Moana’s return.

A sequel to the original animated movie is set to release on 27th November, 2024. That means if you’re hungry for more Moana before the live-action hits theaters, you’ve got something to look forward to in just a few days.

Johnson even shared the news in an Instagram video, where he promised that the movie would feature all the fan-favorite elements—like the ocean, Te Fiti, Heihei, and the beautiful village. We’re also guessing the songs will be just as epic as the original. And yes, we can probably expect another round of You’re Welcome, too.
