Deadline also reported that Academy Award-winning musician Billie Eilish was also approached for the role, but the singer is touring, so that deal didn’t see the light of day. The publication mentioned that the studios are looking for a duo in their 20s. Francesca Sloane will return as the showrunner and executive producer alongside Donald Glover.
The first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith ended on a cliffhanger, which left fans wondering if the duo would return for season two or not. The showrunner back in 2024 shared with Deadline,
We’re just trying to make the best version of Season 2 possible. That’s why we’re being so coy about it. We wanted the ending to leave on this nod to a ‘70s cinema cliffhanger. If we tell you too much, you’ll know early if they survived.
Jeff Sneider, however, shared that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine will be returning for multiple episodes in Season 2.
The new couple, John and Jane Smith, is reportedly going to be different characters and not a replacement for the ones played by Glover and Erskine. No other details were shared about the upcoming season.
Donald Glover recalls reaching out to Brad Pitt for advice for Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The Community actor Donald Glover, upon his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2024, had revealed that he did reach out to the original movie star Brad Pitt to seek advice. However, he said,
He didn’t give me any real pointers. He kind of Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it. He just kind of like charmed his way. He was like, ‘Yeah, you know, you’ll do great’.
In speaking to EW at the time, Glover said the series is going to be different for a lot of people, which is a good thing. He added that people can always go back to watching the original movie, but the series is a fresh new perspective and will give them a different feeling.
Glover continued to share that the series people were going to be shocked, and indeed they were. As it has been reported that Glover is going to return as the executive producer for the second season, it can be assumed that season two is going to be very interesting and exciting like season one.
Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders shared with Deadline that the writers are working hard to give the audience a brilliant Season 2. The studios believe that the audience will get what they are hoping for.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith season one is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
