MTV VMAs 2024: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter Create History

As expected, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards were spectacularly held at the UBS Arena on September 11, 2024. It was initially planned for September 10 but got rescheduled to avoid clashing with the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
This year, the ceremony not only celebrated the music videos and artists but also introduced two new fan-voted categories: VMAs Most Iconic Performance and Best Trending Video. From headline-worthy speeches and some record-breaking wins to amazing performances, the ceremony had it all.
Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter Steal the Spotlight
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards honored the best music videos, artists, and songs released between June 22, 2023, and June 20, 2024. Megan Thee Stallion was hosting the event for the first time, and she brought the heat up with her energetic performances as well.
Taylor Swift became the biggest winner of the night as she won awards in multiple categories and broke several records. Swift bagged 7 awards in total, including Video of the Year award for her song Fortnight, which features Post Malone. The win was more special as she was also the director and writer of the video.
Swift’s acceptance speech was a mix of emotions and shoutouts. According to Billboard, she thanked her fans, the Eras Tour crowd, and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, saying, “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic.” Swift became the first artist to win Video of the Year three years in a row.
Swift also remembered the 9/11 tragedy while receiving the Best Collaboration award for Fortnight and also reminded her fans over 18 to register to vote. She now has 30 VMAs, which ties her with Beyoncé as the most-awarded artist in the history of the VMAs.
Besides the Fortnight singer, Sabrina Carpenter also turned heads thanks to her bold performance. She performed a medley of her latest hits Please Please Please, Taste, and Espresso. The highlight of her performance was when she recreated the kissing scene with Jenna Ortega from Taste, but this time with an alien and an astronaut.
Carpenter’s Espresso won the award for Song of the Year. 2024 has been truly a year for Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, with chartbuster songs and now awards.

The award night was filled with some energetic performances. Eminem came out with a group of Slim Shady doppelgangers and performed Houdini. Katy Perry performed a medley comprising Dark Horse, E.T., and Firework and closed up her set with LIFETIMES, her latest song.
Megan Thee Stallion honored Britney Spears’ I’m a Slave 4 U performance. Other highlights included Anitta’s performance, LISA’s rockin’ show, and Chappell Roan’s debut in front of a burning castle. Benson Boone performed two backflips, and one of them was off his piano.

Some other notable performances came from Lenny Kravitz as he returned to the VMA stage and performed a medley of his hits. Halsey also rocked out in her fiery pixie cut while performing Ego. The 2024 VMAs proved once again why it’s one of music’s biggest nights of the year.
