“My back still tweaks sometimes”: Emily Blunt Still Suffers From the Physical Trauma From Tom Cruise’s Movie
Emily Blunt has played a number of really diverse roles in her career. From being recast as Mary Poppins (a role formerly played by Julia Andrews) in Mary Poppins Returns to showing off her excellent voice by playing the role of the Baker’s Wife in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods, Blunt has done it all. Needless to mention, brilliantly so.
The Oppenheimer actress portrayed Sergeant Rita Vrataski in the 2014 action sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow. This movie also starred Tom Cruise who is famous for the deadly stunts he insists to do on his own. The suits Blunt and Cruise used in this movie were not ordinary and that seems to have adversely affected Blunt’s body.
Emily Blunt Is Still Suffering from the Consequences of Wearing That Suit
Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise had worn exoskeleton suits that weighed nearly 85 pounds and they had to do most of the shoot wearing those suits. The suits used in Edge of Tomorrow were designed by Pierre Bohanna who designed the Batman suits for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. In an interview, Bohanna said that the suit had 400 different pieces and most of them were custom-made.
While Tom Cruise is used to doing such things all the time as he plays the role of Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series, Blunt was fairly new in this realm, and she revealed that she had quite some trouble due to the suit. She said her “back still tweaks out […] sometimes”. She added: “I’ll like turn funny in the car and I’ll be like ‘Tom Cruise!’”
On a 2022 episode of the SmartLess podcast, the actress also said that while it would have been great if the “enormous robotic suits” could be put on Cruise and her using computer-generated imagery, they wanted to keep it as realistic as it could be. Well, that didn’t end well for the A Quiet Place actress who had started training two and a half months before the shooting of the movie just to get in shape to be able to wear the suit.
Emily Blunt is More Than Ready to Do a Sequel
Despite the pain Emily Blunt has to endure due to the suit, she is very willing to do a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. She is almost desperate to reprise her role as Sergeant Rita Vrataski, a member of the United Defense Force, alongside Tom Cruise’s Major William Cage.
In fact, even director Doug Liman is enthusiastic about a sequel. Blunt said: “There was [a script] that Doug kind of slithered over to me… I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when, or how, or how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need?”
Considering Mission: Impossible 7 isn’t doing too well at the box office due to the juggernauts Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, there might be a chance of Tom Cruise returning to Edge of Tomorrow sooner than Emily Blunt, Doug Liman, or the fans are hoping.
