‘My body, my morals, my life, my choice, not yours’: The View Prepares For Major Ratings Plunge as Whoopi Goldberg’s The Handmaid’s Tale Costume Spurs Major Controversy
America has recently been the center of a lot of political controversy in the past year. Various celebrities, people, and political leaders have spoken up on different occasions. People are still taking stands in multiple ways and forms for that. Recently on Halloween, The View had a holiday-themed episode where the theme was “iconic TV characters”.
Host Whoopi Goldberg raised controversy with her outfit, speaking up for abortion rights. Her fellow hosts, Sunny Hostin dressed as the queen from Bridgerton, Alyssa Farah Griffin showed up as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, Joy Behar appeared as Peggy Bundy from Married With Children, Ana Navarro dressed as Charo from The Love Boat and Sara Haines arrived as Catherine O’Hara’s character Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek.
Whoopi Goldberg’s Halloween Outfit
Goldberg gave the fans a lot to talk about when she decided to dress up as June Osborne from The Handmaid’s Tale. Emblazoned on the back of her red cloak was a series of phrases: “My body, My morals, My life, My Choice, Not Yours.”
How did the host come up with the outfit? Jamie Hammer, the senior producer for The View told People magazine that Goldberg came up with the idea after the actress who plays June Osborne in the same movie, Elisabeth Moss came for an interview in September. “But when Elisabeth was on, Goldberg loved her so much that she walked off set and said, ‘I want to do Handmaid’s Tale.’ And from there, we just started building,” he said.
Along with this, Whoopi Goldberg did not go into detail about her costume choice at the start of the show like her fellow co-hosts did. She was the last member of the set to walk on the set and was met by a standing ovation from the audience.
What importance does The Handmaid’s Tale have?
The Handmaid’s Tale is a series based on a novel by Margaret Atwood. The series first aired on 26 April 2017 and talks about how legally controlling women’s reproductive freedom is morally and politically wrong. With all the happenings around the topic in America, the series has taken a center stage and has been the influence for a lot of protests and outfit ideas for a creative outlet.
As Goldberg has been an advocate for women’s rights and autonomy over their bodies and choices, the outfit doesn’t come as a surprise. But with how heated the topic is in The States right now, The View is preparing itself for some backlash and rating plunge as the two sides will split opinions.
