Serena Williams gave details about his father Richard Williams to Will Smith in an email
When Will Smith was preparing himself to play the role of Williams he asked his Tennis superstar daughters to describe their father more. The actor had done extensive research on Williams’s personality, but he wanted to hear more from his daughter. During an interview, Smith said that Serena gave him some details on the email, she had written,
“My dad was and still is way before his time. You see, when someone is different when they don’t act or look how a person assumed they would the first reaction is often fear.”
Serena further added,
“They think, How do we break them? My dad anticipated that, but he would not allow himself or his family to be broken.”
While talking about what he thought of Williams, Smith said he thought Williams was just like his father. The Men In Black actor explained his father’s and Williams’s perspectives and beliefs were the same about family and life. Jada Pinkett Smith’s affair with August Alsina caused a lot of issues for Smith’s own family in the past. Many believed that he could relate to the idea of keeping the family together as he didn’t let the family fall apart.

When Smith first read the script he knew how amazing the story was. He knew the power of the character he was playing. When he first read the script he was able to relate with the story as a father. While talking about his reaction after reading the script, the Emancipation actor said,
“Richard Williams is a lot like my father. So when I first read [the script], I understood what it’s like to want your kids to succeed. I had done it a little bit with my kids.”
Smith further added,
“I understood what it was to try to mold a young mind, how it’s different with sons than it is with daughters.”
