“My relationship self-destructed in front of the world”: Jennifer Lopez Blamed Ben Affleck Breakup on 6% RT Rated Gigli, Fired Entire Team in Anger
The breaking news of Jennifer Lopez getting back with Ben Affleck in 2021 and finally getting married in July 2022 had set the media on fire. The couple was a hot topic in the early 2000s when they first started dating, however, due to circumstances they failed to remain in a relationship. But the good news is finally the couple is back together, enjoying each other’s company.
The couple seemed to have faced a great struggle early in their relationship which was pushed into the spotlight by fans pointing out the failure of their movie together. The couple getting back into a relationship is not only reminding the fans of their initial struggle but also the celebrity couple seems to remember quite a lot about the detrimental effect of their movie together on their career.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s relationship in retrospect
Fans spotted Affleck and Lopez come together after their first film Gigli. Although the movie brought the couple together to work on the same project, it wasn’t quite lucky for them. The couple initially struggled to keep the spark in their romance, and at that time their relationship was thrust into the spotlight through their film Gigli. Fans and critics went rogue on their movie and things soon started going downhill. Critics and fans reviewed the film — “The film isn’t just bad, it’s jaw-droppingly bad.”
The failure of the film and the reviews altogether caused a detrimental effect on Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez‘s relationship. Despite the power couple being involved in the movie, there was nothing positive about it, which as the couple predicted could take a toll on their career. The movie failed to receive positive feedback and simply achieved to gain a 6% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The trauma from the failure of the film was so bad that Lopez recalled questioning herself “I lost my sense of self, questioned if I belonged in this business, thought maybe I did suck at everything.” She added “And my relationship self-destructed in front of the entire world. It was a two-year thing for me until I picked myself up again.”
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez share experiences of Gigli
In retrospect when the Batman actor Ben Affleck is asked about his failed film with Jennifer Lopez, he recalls the film being an utter disaster right after it got released. However, Affleck never fails to appreciate the fact when he got to meet Jennifer on the set of Gigli. “I did get to meet Jennifer, the relationship with whom has been really meaningful to me in my life,” he stated. No matter how bad it turned out for Ben Affleck, he never failed to maintain a positive outlook and recalled “If the reaction to Gigli hadn’t happened, I probably wouldn’t have ultimately decided, ‘I don’t really have any other avenue but to direct movies.‘”
As for Jennifer Lopez, the failure of the movie felt like an entirely different experience, which helped her make a bold move in her career with The Boy Next Door. Although Lopez seems to recall how pissed she was at the failure of Gigli, she nearly fired the entire team and made some major changes to the team.
Thankfully, the trauma from Gigli was temporary in both the celebrity’s careers and they both got back on track. It all turned out fine for Lopez and Affleck’s careers. Although their relationship didn’t work out in the early 2000s, the couple got back in 2021, when the time seemed right.
