David Fincher, known for making some of the best thrillers of all time, has been partnering with Netflix for quite some time now. The reason? He believes streamers are the future of the entertainment industry. As far as viewers are concerned, they are just happy to have their favorite shows and artists working to make great projects, no matter where they are released.

However, as much as fans love David Fincher and his partner Netflix, they cannot overlook the fact that the streamer keeps canceling shows out of the blue even though they are good enough to move on to the next season. One such show is Fincher’s Mindhunter, and fans have openly expressed their displeasure regarding the show’s cancelation after the recent update on it.

Fans on Mindhunter Getting Canceled After Just Two Seasons

Mindhunter is a psychological crime thriller show which has received great critical and audience feedback. While the first season saw two FBI agents establishing a behavioral unit to understand the psychology of imprisoned serial killers, the second season saw the agents working on the infamous Atlanta child murders of 1979-81.

The third season would have focused on the serial killer Dennis Rader as his appearance was teased throughout the second season. However, in a recent update regarding the show (via DiscussingFilm on X), it is reported that the show will not return for a third season as David Fincher and the showrunners were told:

“it makes no sense to produce this series, unless you can reduce the budget, or make it more pop.”

David Fincher, who has worked on projects like Fight Club and House of Cards, is not one to compromise on quality so reducing the budget is not viable for him. Fans are quite unhappy about this. Here is what some of them have said.

Fans are right in being outraged about the cancelation of such a great series, but there is only so much that can be done about it.

In 2020, Fincher had said how the budget is an issue for the show’s third season. He told Vulture:

“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

The reason David Fincher works with Netflix is that they are willing to invest more money in his projects than the other studios. If Netflix is refusing to invest in Mindhunter, the only hope for fans is another streamer (Disney+ or HBO) swooping in to pick it up.

The first two seasons of Mindhunter are available for streaming on Netflix.
