Blue Eye Samurai follows a deadly female ronin warrior, Mizu, on a bloody path of vengeance across feudal Japan. The first season concludes with Mizu exacting revenge on those responsible for her mother’s murder while hinting at a larger mystery still to be solved.
While the show has received glowing reviews, racking up a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Scheier says Netflix will base the renewal decision primarily on hard viewing data. Specifically, how many subscribers watch the show to completion within the first 28 days?
According to The Escapist,
“Netflix has very complex metrics that the creatives involved don’t get access to,” Scheier explained. “What’s most important is that viewers watch the entire first season within the first month. That’s the best way fans can show their support.”
So far, the limited data available seems positive. Blue Eye Samurai drew an estimated 2.9 million viewers globally in its first week. Co-creator Michael Green called the early ratings “encouraging” and said he was “cautiously optimistic” about a second season.

While the first season of Blue Eye Samurai delivers a self-contained revenge story, the finale teases a broader mystery for Mizu to uncover in potential future seasons.
“We’ve only just scratched the surface of this character and her eventual legacy,” Green hinted. “Season 1 shows Mizu claiming vengeance in Japan, but there are sinister forces coordinating these events on a global scale that have yet to be revealed.”
Fans like influential game developer Hideo Kojima have been vocal in lobbying Netflix for a renewal. And with plenty of narrative territory left to explore, the series creators have justified confidence that their bloody samurai saga deserves to continue.
