Tom Sturridge’s American fantasy drama The Sandman is based on a book by the same name, authored by Neil Gaiman. Producer David S. Goyer pitched the movie adaptation of The Sandman to the reputed production house Warner Bros in 2013. Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt was supposed to direct and star in the movie adaptation, but due to creative differences, the actor walked out. Later on, Warner Bros shifted their attention towards television and Netflix came forward to produce the series in 2019.

Recently, the Daily Mail gave some much-awaited good news to The Sandman fans by sharing pictures from the set of season 2. According to the pictures, Tom Sturridge was seen sharing a scene with an unnamed character dressed in all-white attire, while the actor wore a similar outfit to what Morpheus usually wears. From the pictures, it was quite evident that Tom Sturridge’s Morpheus was in a serious confrontation with the character in white robes.

Author and screenwriter Neil Gaiman openly supported the writer’s strike and even pointed out how it delayed the release of the second season of The Sandman. While replying to a query on Tumblr, the author mentioned

“Whether or not any of Sandman is delayed depends on how long the strike goes. And there won’t be scab scripts on Sandman.” 

The 2023 Writer’s Guild Strike has gone on to impact many projects in Hollywood. Multiple movies and shows are halted halfway through production, and the release of many projects has been delayed as well.

After the success and positive reception from critics and fans, Netflix did not take much time before announcing the second chapter of The Sandman. Meanwhile, Neil Gaiman confirmed in April 2023 that the – “Scripts are written. We are casting the first episode we will be shooting. Sets are being designed,” for the sequel of The Sandman.

Even after the confirmation made by the executive producer and the creator of The Sandman, rumors about Netflix changing its mind and canceling the shows after their renewal was doing the rounds of the entertainment world. During an interview with Comicbook.com, Neil Gaiman mentioned-

“Netflix could go out of business before more Sandman launches. A new, nightmarish pestilence could close the world down completely. The actors could all be eaten by weasels and the show would be shuttered. But if there’s a Netflix and nothing unforeseen and tragic happens to close the world or the show down, then there will be more Sandman.”

According to the developments in the second season of The Sandman, the plot is based on the volume The Season of Mists. According to Gaiman, the character of Despair, portrayed by Donna Preston, would go through a major transformation in the second season. Tom Sturridge would be back as Dream/Morpheus, and as Lucifer has a major role in the second season of The Sandman, Gwendoline Christie will be retained.

The first season of The Sandman was very much similar to its source, but the same cannot be predicted about the second chapter. With the addition of new characters and faces and the limited screen presence of the retained characters, changes in the plot are expected. The Sandman season 2 is expected to premiere in 2024 on Netflix
