New Daredevil: Born Again Update is Forcing MCU Fans to Defend One Hiring Decision That has Left People Doubting
The miniseries Daredevil: Born Again, based on the Marvel Comics character Daredevil, is a highly anticipated series in the MCU. The miniseries is the second series, which is centered around the character followed by Daredevil, which premiered from 2015 to 2018 on Netflix. Charlie Cox is going to return as fan-favorite Daredevil/Matt Murdock, alongside Jon Bernthal, Margarita, Vincent D’Onofrio, Michael Gandolfini, and more.
Daredevil: Born Again that is going to premiere on Disney+ was given a lighter tone compared to the Netflix series by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, who served as the head writers at the time. However, Dario Sacrdapane was hired as the showrunner, while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were hired as lead directors in October 2023, which changed the approach of the series and made it more directly connected to the Netflix series. A recent update from the creative team has had MCU fans defending the show.
Secret Invasion editor to join the editing room for Daredevil: Born Again
According to the Cosmic Marvel account, editor Melissa Lawson Cheung, who served as the editor for the MCU’s Secret Invasion, is going to serve as the editor for the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.
Secret Invasion, based on 2008’s Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, starred Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and more. The series followed Nick Fury and Talos as they set out on a mission to uncover the conspiracy by shape-shifting Skrulls to conquer the Earth.
The audience had a lot of expectations from the series, but upon its release, the series received mixed reviews from the critics and the audience. As a whole, the series was a huge disappointment for MCU fans. So after it was known that the editor of Secret Invasion was going to work on Daredevil: Born Again, it was natural for some fans to criticize the decision.

But ardent MCU fans were quick to defend the decision, as they pointed out that the disappointment that they witnessed with Secret Invasion had nothing to do with Melissa Lawson Cheung’s editing. A user on Reddit wrote, ‘Secret Invasion had problems, and none of them were related to the editing.’
She edited episodes 2-4 of secret invasion. The show was already doomed before she edited it so it’s not a bad thing. And she’s probably gonna be one of many editors too

What's the matter with some people, she's just an editor…. She didn't make Secret Invasion into that shit

She’s an editor not a writer she worked on secret invasion yes but an editor splices the shots into a show based on what the showrunner wants

A user mentioned, ‘I know the editing wasn’t the problem, and she’s not at fault, but either way, I don’t think I’d be putting that one on my resume.’ As another one wrote, ‘I’m already seeing people coping on the defense because of this. Y’all precious little Daredevil show is going to be garbage, and you can’t take it.’ But a user was quick to remind the fans that Secret Invasion had problems and none of them were related to the editing.
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio talk about being involved in the creative process
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio appeared at Disney’s upfront presentation, where the two of them revealed to Deadline what viewers can expect from the show. Cox said,
It’s a physically demanding show, which I love; I wouldn’t have it any other way. There will come a time when I am not able to do it anymore, but for right now, just keep doing the best job we can and loving it. Feel incredibly grateful for still making this show, and hopefully, we get another ten years on us.
The two of them shared that they don’t have many scenes together in the show, but despite sharing a screen space for a very short time, they are very much involved in the creative process.
We’re on the phone all the time. We agree on almost everything. I read the scripts first, and I’ll text Vincent, and he’ll be like, ‘What do you think?’, And I’ll be like, ‘I’m not saying it till you read it. And then we’ll talk about it.
Charlie Cox shared with TV Insider (via CBR) that there was a lot of crossover between the Netflix Daredevil and the one that is upcoming after the creative team was changed. Vincent D’Onofrio chimed in to say that the show was originally not going to be at all, but now it’s a lot.
The actor also revealed that the upcoming show perfectly strikes a balance between Daredevil and Born Again, which is going to satisfy old and new fans.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere in March 2025.
