“No Kev, you don’t want to talk to them”: Sarah Ferguson Warned Kevin Costner Amid His Heated Controversy With The Royal Family Over Princess Diana
British TV personality and author Sarah Ferguson once had to warn Kevin Costner against contacting the British royal family directly over Princess Diana. Ferguson is also the former wife of Prince Andrew, son of Queen Elizabeth II and younger brother of now-King Charles III.
Costner got into an ugly situation with the royal family after the unfortunate demise of the Princess of Wales in 1997. News about her involvement in the making of the sequel to Costner’s The Bodyguard movie had leaked and the royals refused to believe it. Consequently, the Yellowstone star wanted to talk to them directly but was advised against it.
Sarah Ferguson Advised Kevin Costner to Avoid Talking to the British Royal Family Directly
Ferguson and Diana, Princess of Wales, were childhood friends and married into the royal family just a few years apart. While the latter got married to then-Prince Charles III in 1981, the former tied the knot with Prince Andrew in 1986.
In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, it was revealed that it was through Ferguson that Kevin Costner was able to contact Princess Diana and ask her if she would be interested in starring in a sequel to the hugely popular The Bodyguard movie. Luckily, the Princess had agreed to do it.
This was after her divorce from now-King Charles III. Even so, after her passing, when the British royal family learned about her interest in starring in the movie, they vehemently denied it because they did not believe that she would do that, which would imply that Costner was not telling the truth.
The Untouchables star claimed that he let it be for a while, but then the situation got worse, and talking directly to the royal family seemed to be his only option, so he asked Ferguson for advice.
Finally, I called up Sarah, and said, ‘Sarah, you need to tell me who is leading the charge there on this thing. She goes, ‘No, no, no, Kev, you don’t want to talk to them.'”
Costner decided that he had to talk to the royal family. So, he called the palace and told them to stop saying that it was not true because it was, and if they did not stop, the actor would have to start speaking publicly about it.
Princess Diana Wanted to Have a Kissing Scene in the Movie
Princess Diana was known for her friendly and compassionate nature, often labeled the People’s Princess. Costner revealed that during their second call regarding the movie, the Princess asked if there would be a kissing scene.
I said, ‘Do you want there to be one?’ She said, ‘Yeah,’ and I said, ‘Then we’ll do that.’ I wasn’t going to make the full romance about her. But there was going to be a moment that we did. And she was so sweet about this.
However, after she passed away, Costner refused to make the movie at all because he believed that no one could replace the Princess.
