No Way Home: Doctor Strange Star Benedict Cumberbatch Addresses Film’s Global Impact
The MCU’s Doctor Strange has finally chimed in on the immense success of No Way Home at the box office. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, having a rather pivotal role in its storyline. No Way Home has had some massive success at the box office since it opened in December. The movie has now gone on to earn a massive $724.9 million at the box-office domestically and $1.69 billion across the globe. This makes the movie Sony’s highest-grossing film ever while being the fourth-highest grossing film ever in North America, and if these stats aren’t enough, the sixth-highest grossing movie ever to be released worldwide. Not-so-surprisingly, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that he feels quite “amazing” about the films’ success, even admitting that he and his co-star Tom Holland pushed for the inclusion of Doctor Strange in No Way Home.
Benedict Cumberbatch talks about No Way Home
“I’m very spoiled because Tom Holland and I had petitioned that the neighborhood superheroes should cross paths again,” Cumberbatch tells Variety. “To have those three films culminate in that moment was extraordinary to be a part of. And to let my character make some hefty mistakes out of love — really, out of generosity towards someone he realizes he really cares for. From a stand-alone success of a movie, of a franchise, it’s phenomenal. I genuinely sat there entertained, thrilled, really moved. I laughed a lot. I cheered. It’s a fantastic feeling to be back in a cinema, being able to do that and to prove that not everything has to be streamed. And I think that’s important moving forward. It’s not just for exhibitors but for the social gain, the excitement of being in a crowd of people experiencing that live thing of watching it.”
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The cast also includes Zendaya reprising the role of MJ while Jacob Batalon returns as Ned. No Way Home also sees various returning villains including Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doctor Ock.
In No Way Home, with Spider-Man’s secret identity now revealed to the world, our friendly neighborhood superhero is unmasked and is unable to separate his normal life as Peter from the high stakes of being Spider-Man. When Peter seeks Doctor Strange’s help, the stakes become more dangerous, forcing the hero to finally discover what it actually means to be Spider-Man.
