SUMMARY
  • The O.C. was one of the most beloved shows of the early 2000s and turned into a pop culture phenomenon.
  • Adam Brody, who played Seth Cohen in the show, has reportedly played a huge role in the reboot not happening.
  • Other stars from the show are willing to reprise their characters if the reboot ever happens.

With reboots of so many TV shows happening, some also might have hoped for a reboot of The O.C. However, the possibility of that happening is looking less and less likely now that news of Adam Brody’s alleged interference has surfaced.

It has been almost two decades since the fourth season of the show aired and came to a satisfying end. The thing about fictional worlds is that they can be brought back to life no matter how much time has passed as long as there is an audience for it and the revival story is convincing enough. That said, The O.C. might not get that chance because of Brody’s alleged reluctance about it.

Adam Brody has reportedly managed to talk The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz out of a reboot idea

Adam Brody began professionally acting in 1999 and landed his first major role in a TV show in 2002 when he cast as Dave Rygalski, Lane’s bandmate and love interest, in Gilmore Girls. His breakthrough came next year when he was cast as Seth Cohen in the Fox TV show The O.C., which turned out to be a pop culture phenomenon when it first premiered.

In the show, Seth and his brother Ryan Atwood navigate their lives in the high-class world of Newport Beach. The Cohen family has a cultural clash with the materialistic and close-minded community in which they reside. The show is set in Orange County (O.C.), Southern California.

All the characters in the show got a fulfilling ending when the show concluded and allegedly, Brody and Schwartz want to protect this legacy even though that has led them to decline very ludicrous offers for a reboot. A source close to Brody told Life & Style:

Adam was firmly against it and essentially talked the creator of the show, Josh Schwartz, out of the idea. You don’t see this happen a lot, especially these days, and everybody became aware of the fact that Adam and Josh turned down a lot of money because they are so focused on protecting the legacy of the original mid-2000s series.

The confidante also mentioned that if Brody had signed up for the reboot, he would not have been able to star in the Netflix series, Nobody Wants This. The romantic comedy show starring Kristen Bell as the female protagonist has turned out to be a huge hit and has marked the Shazam! actor’s career resurgence.

Is anyone from the original cast interested in The O.C. reboot?

Although Brody’s reported involvement has certainly diminished the chances of the reboot happening, there are some other members of the cast who are quite interested in reprising their roles. At FanExpo Canada held earlier this year, Ben McKenzie, who portrayed Ryan Atwood, told Collider:

It’d be interesting to revisit those characters too. I mean, I talked to Josh about that, and I’ve dabbled with that a little bit. Nothing is happening right now that I know of, but it would be kind of interesting.

McKenzie even suggested that new characters would have to be introduced alongside the old ones if the reboot were to happen at some point. Additionally, actress Rachel Bilson who played the role of Summer Roberts told OK! that she would not mind returning to the show.

I go through both in my head — it’s like I have two sides of my brain arguing with each other. One side is like, ‘It was really special, people are still discovering it, leave it be,’ and then the other side is like, ‘How much fun would it be to go back and explore more and work with people I love?’ It really goes both ways, and I am super supportive of either direction.

She also stated that many of the cast members believe that it is for the best if the show is left as it is instead of picking it up again because it could be hard to match up to the expectations of the fans or even be at the same level as those four seasons. The argument seems understandable considering how unpredictable reboots can be.

The O.C. is available for streaming on Max and Hulu.
