‘Not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my vag*na?’: Jennifer Lawrence Says Gender Pay Gap Still Exists, Studios Still Pay Male Stars More Even After She Won An Oscar
Hollywood is not free from bias. No matter what gimmicks they adopt, there is no running away from this sad reality. Bias toward the black community is still at large in the industry. And another sad reality is that the industry has always been dominated by men. Women despite being an important part of the industry, are still discriminated against. The tilted pay scale is just another example of this inherent bias in the industry. And it can’t be claimed that it’s just the newbies who are discriminated against. Even the veterans fare no better. Recent revelations made by Jennifer Lawrence are a case in point.
Jennifer Lawrence received $5 million less than Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up
According to Independent, Jennifer Lawrence’s paycheck was smaller in comparison to her male counterpart, Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up. And not by a small margin. The difference between their paychecks was a staggering $5m for the movie.
While Jennifer Lawrence received $25m, the Revenant star received $30m for Don’t Look Up. While some would claim that it might have something to do with the difference in caliber, a lot of people would disagree that she didn’t do a better job than Leo.
Jennifer Lawrence calls out Hollywood for the discrimination against actors of the same caliber
In an interview with Vogue, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that her contemporary male actors with the same caliber and “level of fame are overpaid”. She reiterated how disappointed she was by this practice. She even admitted that the “common discrepancy is still bothersome” for her.
She feels like the impact her efforts should have isn’t being reciprocated by the people around her. Of course, she doesn’t disregard Leonardo DiCaprio’s contribution to the movie. But the discrimination is there for everyone to see. And it stings her like a thorn. She said, “It doesn’t matter how much I do. I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my v*gina?”
Time to take a look at the mirror
Jennifer Lawrence’s plea gives us a new perspective to have another look at this much-debated topic. The practice has been prevalent for ages in Hollywood. But there’s no visible end to the problem.
Jennifer Lawrence reminisced how the situation was the same in 2013 when her male co-stars were paid more handsomely than she was for American Hustle. Was there any reasonable ground for the bias? Or just the good old ways of the trade.
