The eighth and final season of the show received criticism for its reduced length and creative decisions. Many fans believed that the brilliant story was given a very disappointing conclusion. However, Game of Thrones’ conclusion allowed a fan-favorite actor to express how he feels about his character on the show.

Jerome Flynn gets candid about working on Game of Thrones

Actor Jerome Flynn played Bronn on the show, who is described as an individual with a sarcastic sense of humor and a pragmatic, amoral philosophy. The character and the actor became fan favorites because of his humor, and towards the end of the show, Bronn was named Lord of Highgarden and Lord Paramount of the Reach.

In an interview with Pedestrian, the actor was asked about his experience working on a fantasy drama series. He was asked about his initial feeling of being on the set, to which he said,

I felt nervous because I hadn’t been on screen for ten years, and I thought I was kind of leaving it behind—or at least I thought I could be. Nothing was put in front of me that made me want to jump. I had moved to Wales, and so I was quite nervous about going back into that whole culture and who I would be in it.

Flynn admits that even though he didn’t know who David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were, very quickly into the filming, he realized he was involved in something really good. He added that once they started filming, he could see the scale and the quality of the show he was a part of. But the actor mentioned that he was worried about one specific thing,

I was a bit worried at the start—and with American production doing a kind of Medieval Europe, I thought, ‘Oh, we could die a death here.’. But I hadn’t seen a script at that point, so I really didn’t know except that I’d liked what I read in the audition, so I was basing it on that.

Luckily, the actor’s suspicion was proved wrong because the makers did a fantastic job in portraying a Medieval Europe. Flynn recalled that on his first day, when he got to get his make-up and wardrobe, the team was contemplating whether to dye his hair or give him a wig. He opted to dye his hair for the next ten years.

Jerome Flynn shared about his ‘ star struck’ moment on the Game of Thrones set

The actor was asked about the last day on the set of GOT, which he described as a whole mixture of emotions. He also added that he was a bit star-struck because after being on the show for eight years, he was acting with characters he’d never acted with before on the last day. He explained during the interview,

The nature of Game of Thrones is that you work with whoever you are on the road with. So there was that, and it was a two-day shoot for my final scene. And on the second day, it started to dawn on me that the clock was ticking. So it was all surreal and really moving. I think I had a period of mourning afterward when I kind of realized that was it.

Jerome Flynn mentioned that when an actor is on a good show with a good crew and cast, it’s always very special. He added that it was quite something for him to walk away from the people who felt like family, pointing out that when an actor is in a scene with Peter Dinklage, Liam Cunningham, and Conleth Hill, they’re just in trouble.

Talking about the ending of the show, Flynn admits that he was nervous about how it would end because the bar was so high and so many people had such high expectations. But he noted that the makers did well, as there was a good balance, including some shocks and sadness. He described the ending as bittersweet but sensible.
