Olivia Rodrigo‘s singing debut happened with the release of her first single, drivers license, in January 2021. Although she had written songs before, this song marked the beginning of her career as a solo artist.

Since then, there is no stopping for her. Even established megastars are taking notice, with none other than Ed Sheeran singing her praises. Recently, the megastar said:

Both those records actually, ‘GUTS’ and ‘SOUR,’ are un-skippable. It’s just, as a record, just a great record.

The popular singer’s kind words will definitely leave Rodrigo in awe. The deja vu star’s first album, SOUR, became a number one hit back in 2021! Critics loved how honestly it expressed the ups and downs of being a teenager.

Similarly, her latest album, GUTS, was a massive success. As reported by Billboard, it debuted at number one on both the US Billboard 200 chart and the UK Albums Chart.

Ed Sheeran Compared Olivia Rodrigo to Avril Lavigne

Somewhere else in the interview with Most Requested Live, Ed Sheeran compared the 21-year-old to pop-punk icon Avril Lavigne. The West Yorkshire native told host Michael Bennett:

I love Olivia Rodrigo. I don’t know if she would like this comparison, but I’ve been saying for years the world needs a new Avril Lavigne. You know, like a girl who rocks out and writes the song, and she’s 17, and she’s, like, fantastic. I love that whole thing that’s going on.

When big singers like Sheeran say Rodrigo reminds them of Lavigne, it’s clear that pop-punk is making a big comeback. Punk Princess Avril Lavigne was a huge pop culture icon in the early 2000s. Her skater punk style and signature neckties became incredibly popular back then.

There is no doubt, though, that Livy’s honest feelings and relatable words connect with today’s young listeners. It absolutely is reviving the lively spirit of early 2000s pop-punk.
