“Once it was a Star Wars film”: Zack Snyder’s Wife Reveals Why She Never Wanted $166 Million Worth ‘Rebel Moon’ to Be Another Star Wars Like Movie
Zack Snyder has gained world recognition as the director of some of the greatest movies of all time, especially Warner Bros’ 2013 movie Man of Steel that jumpstarted the DC extended universe as it was a reboot of the Superman franchise. He has also produced or directed other comic or superhero movies such as 300, its prequel 300: Rise of an Empire and Watchmen.
Zack Snyder started a production company Cruel and Unusual Films, Inc. with his wife Deborah Snyder and producer Wesley Coller. The company was later rebranded to The Stone Quarry that is now producing Snyder’s upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon. Little is known about the movie but recently Deborah Snyder revealed that there is something she did not want the movie to turn into.

Zack Snyder’s Wife’s Reasoning for Avoiding Star Wars Like Film
There is no denying that Zack Snyder’s skills in making blockbuster superhero or comic movies is unbeatable. However, his wife and producer Deborah Snyder wasn’t so sure about Rebel Moon, with an estimated budget of $166 million becoming another Star Wars movie. She expressed her concern about this saying:
“Once, it was a Star Wars film, and I never wanted it to be. I remember, I said to Zack, ‘I just feel like your hands are going to be tied so much in what that IP is,’ even though it kind of lived outside of it. So I was kind of happy when that fell apart, because I always felt like it was better.”
Whether Rebel Moon is going to be better than Star Wars or not remains to be seen as the former is yet to hit the screens, not to mention that Star Wars has an unmatchable legacy of his own. Even so, it is refreshing to see someone taking the initiative to make an original movie instead of a reboot or a sequel.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Producer Agrees
Zack Snyder’s wife is not the only person who agreed upon the fact that the science fantasy movie Rebel Moon should ditch Star Wars. Producer Eric Newman revealed how Snyder’s aspiration changed from making a movie set in the Star Wars universe to making something that isn’t Star Wars at all. Newman explained, saying:
“I remember [Zack] calling me at some point, and this has got to be 15 years ago, saying, ‘I’m thinking of doing Seven Jedi, in the Star Wars universe.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool idea.’ […] Then, a few years later, he calls me and goes, ‘You know, I think it could be a television show.’ I’m like, ‘Yes, let’s do this! F*** ‘Star Wars!’ Let’s do this as a TV show.'”
For more than four decades, different directors and production houses have tried their best to achieve what Star Wars achieved in terms of both fame and financial success. While some like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Lord of the Rings managed to achieve this feat, so far, no one has been able to build a universe like Star Wars from scratch because both of the formerly mentioned franchises had their respective source materials.
