SUMMARY
  • Including Val would have made Jon Snow's story much more dramatic.
  • A love triangle with Val and Daenerys would’ve added depth to Jon Snow’s story.
  • Missing Val was a lost opportunity to enrich Jon's character in the TV show.

A long-forgotten character from George R.R. Martin’s books could have brought something fiery to Jon Snow’s tale. While everyone was glued by Jon and Daenerys Targaryen’s icy romance in Game of Thrones, there was an untapped storyline from the books as well.

This plotline could have made their love even more intense. Yep, you heard that right! It’s intriguing to think about how this could have added even more drama to an already dramatic story! It is the addition of Princess Val—a beautiful wildling. This single character could have changed Jon from the noble but often serious character we know into a more torn character.

In the books, there’s a wildling princess named Val, who is so beautiful that even high lords in Stannis Baratheon’s army want to marry her. Stannis offers Jon Snow (Kit Harington) the chance to become the Lord of Winterfell, but with a condition: Jon must marry Val to bring the Wildlings to his side.

Although the offer is tempting, Jon refuses. Val then invites Jon to come and rescue her from Stannis’ tower (a wildling tradition for claiming a bride). She is actually the one whom Jon sends to find Tormund and bring the Wildling forces through the Wall.

Imagine if the show had explored a storyline where he wasn’t just heading to Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). Instead, he had to marry the gorgeous wildling princess Val to make a political deal. It would be both a huge responsibility and a serious temptation.

Introducing Val could have turned the show into a soap opera-style love triangle. Jon would be caught between his duty to his people, trying to keep Val, and his undeniable attraction to Daenerys.

In the TV show, it could have been interesting if Jon married the princess before he met Daenerys. This would have made his character more complex, showing him making tough choices and dealing with the results—rather than just being a simple hero.

Moreover, if Val died before Jon met Daenerys, it would make Jon’s feelings for Daenerys more intense and make their love story a lot more spicier. Val had a lot of potential. Leaving her out was a missed chance to make Jon’s story deeper. Although Jon and Daenerys had great chemistry, a more complicated love life for Jon could have taken the series to a whole new level.
