Upon release, the highly anticipated movie of 2024 opened to a positive response from the audience and the critics. The critics went ahead to praise Ridley Scott’s direction, the grand set pieces, the battle sequences, and the performances in the movie. There has been buzz about Washington even securing an Academy Award nomination for his performance. One actor, who was supposed to play a major role, did not make it to the final cut.

May Calamawy reveals her character never made it to the final cut of Gladiator 2

Actress May Calamawy appeared as Layla El-Faouly/ Scarlet Scarab in 2022’s Moon Knight opposite Oscar Isaac. Calamawy’s character is the first Arab and first Egyptian character to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and she was highly lauded for her performance in the show.

The actress recently appeared at the London Comic-Con, where she reportedly revealed that she was a part of Ridley Scott’s recent release Gladiator II for a very significant role. She shared that her scenes did not make it to the final cut, but didn’t share why.

ScreenRant reported that Scott had finalized the actress for the movie after an in-depth search similar to Paul Mescal. The publication noted that the actress finally got the part after multiple auditions and took part in the principal photography alongside the remaining cast. But Calamawy was not a part of the trailer or posters that showcased the cast of the movie.

The actress was however briefly seen in the background of some shots without any dialogue. The X user that was at the London Comic-Con shared that the actress said that she was sad that her scenes were cut, but she described her experience of working on the movie as one of the best. Calamawy noted that she loved working with Denzel Washington, adding that she instantly felt comfortable around him.

May Calamawy’s absence from Gladiator 2 sparks controversy

The actress’ scenes’ absence from the movie has now taken a major turn towards linking it to the Israel-Palestine war. Even though no evidence states that her scenes were cut from the movie due to her Palestinian descent, fans believe that it could be one of the reasons.

One of the reasons why her scene might not have made it to the final cut could be because of time purposes. However, neither the actress clarified why she was left out nor has the filmmaker commented on the situation as of now.

A Reddit user noted that Ravi, played by Alexander Karim in the movie, feels like a last-minute addition to the movie. Some suggested that it was Sky Dance and Paramount who denied her inclusion. Another reason why she was supposed to play a significant role in the movie and never made it was explained that she was maybe meant to be Lucius’ love interest. The user explained,

I assume the cut plot point was that she was the one meant to heal Lucius’ injuries and then fall in love with him. But in the final film, the healer’s role went to Ravi. Ridley Scott probably believed that introducing a love interest would conflict with Lucius’ revenge motivation.

However, Pedro Pascal made sure that the actress knew that he was always going to be there for her and support her. He shared a couple of pictures from the set and included pictures with Calamawy as well. An X user appreciated the actor for being so brave and actually including her in the photo dump but also questioned the makers’ decision to pretend that she doesn’t exist.

Ridley Scott has not yet commented on the situation, but some insiders have said that her character was cut due to the movie’s lengthy runtime and tightly packed narrative as the reasons for the cut. They said that the final edit of the movie is always a balancing act, and it’s about condensing an epic story down to the right size.

However, fans’ constant questions about Calamawy’s scenes from the movie will surely come back to Scott.
