Even Jim Parsons Would be Scratching His Head Over One Dark Secret in ‘The Big Bang Theory’ That Young Sheldon Completely Failed to Address
This article contains spoilers for the final season of Young Sheldon.
With millions of daily viewers, Young Sheldon, the spin-off series of The Big Bang Theory, was concluded in May 2024. Although the series is filled with lots of scientific theories, there is one dark secret in The Big Bang Theory, that Young Sheldon completely failed to address, over which even Jim Parsons (who played the character of genius Sheldon in both the series) would be scratching his head.
The Big Bang Theory’s Dark Secret is not so dark anymore
Anyone who is a fan of The Big Bang Theory knows that Sheldon has a compulsive three-knocks at the door habit, which he does to make sure that the person on the other side has their pants on before opening the door.
In the episode ‘The Hot Tub Contamination’, the reasoning behind the door knocking is revealed. It turns out that Sheldon once came home unexpectedly, and he heard a sound from his parent’s bedroom. On opening the door, he saw his father having relations with another woman.
On speaking with TVLine, writer Steve Molaro and Co-creator Chuck Lorre opened about the whole situation and confirmed that George never cheated on Mary. In Young Sheldon episode, ‘Ants on a Log and a Cheating Winker’, it turns out that the other woman Sheldon saw, was his mother. She puts on a wig and a costume and acts as a German woman named Helga to spice up things with her husband, George.
An eye-opener for Young Sheldon
The secret comes as an eye opener for Young Sheldon as all his life, he carried an image of a cheater for his father. This also became the reasoning behind his three knocks on the door. Writer Steve Molaro explains it like this,
He did not know it was Mary. He thought he saw his father with another woman, but he didn’t and there’s a sadness to it, that he’s carried it all these years.
Years of sadness, trauma, and heart-wrenching feelings in Young Sheldon’s mind is what would make even Jim Parson scratch his head. Witnessing his father with another woman, that too at a young age, made Sheldon helpless, and as a result, he could not even discuss it with his mother.
Imagine watching #TBBT and finding out the sad reason behind Sheldon's Three Knock rule only to find out years later via #YoungSheldon that it was just his parents doing roleplay.

Crazy writing! Kudos to the team.
P.S. I'm very glad George's arc has been so wholesome! pic.twitter.com/CfxECAPrBa
The revelation also serves delight to Sheldon fans, as their favorite character finally came in light with the truth. It is also heart-wrenching to see Young Sheldon feel the guilt of questioning his father’s loyalty.
