Director Woody Allen has announced that he will retire after releasing his 50th film. The director told the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia that he will stop making movies and spend more time writing in his later years. He has been living in Europe for a while now since his popularity in the United States dipped due to the disgusting allegations that were put against him by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. The director said his next movie, which is set in Paris, will be “exciting, dramatic, and also quite ominous,” and somewhat like Match Point.

The four-time Academy Award-winning actor and director, Woody Allen, hinted in June that he will retire from filmmaking because “a lot of the thrill is gone.” The director told the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, “My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies, and focus on writing.” He also revealed that he liked the idea of traditional cinema and not the modern streaming services, “I don’t get the same fun [as] doing a movie and putting it in a theater. It was a nice feeling to know that 500 people were seeing it at once.

Dylan Farrow accused the director of sexual abuse

In August 1992, Woody Allen was accused of sexually molesting his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow at her adoptive mother, actress Mia Farrow’s house in Bridgewater, Connecticut when she was seven. The director has repeatedly denied the allegation over the years. However, no charges were pressed against him as the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of Yale–New Haven Hospital concluded that the director did not sexually abuse Dylan Farrow and was likely influenced by Mia Farrow. At the time, Mia Farrow discovered that Woody Allen is in a relationship with another one of her adoptive daughters, Soon-Yi Previn, who married the director in 1997.

In 2018, Woody Allen’s comments about Dylan Farrow were enough for Amazon to cancel its release of Woody Allen’s 2019 film A Rainy Day in New York. He claimed a breach of contract in his $68 million lawsuit against them as they went against their $80 million contract. Later, a settlement was reached outside of court.
