One Piece: Eiichiro Oda Based Sanji on 1 Legendary Actor from Quentin Tarantino’s Movie That is Surprisingly Not Leonardo DiCaprio
Decades have passed since the Straw Hat crew was created by the One Piece author. Though the manga’s initial chapters are still visited by both new and seasoned readers, the series has undoubtedly changed since its release. Fans were initially unaware of how Eiichiro Oda came up with the crew, although the artist did alert everyone to the existence of one pirate.
Sanji was the fourth member of the crew and one of the main focus of One Piece, as part of the Straw Hat Pirates. Sanji is not just one of the most skilled fighters in the series but also a very gifted chef who longs to uncover the mystery of All Blue. He uses his legs to fight instead of his hands because he doesn’t want to hurt his hands while fighting. Sanji is a gallant person. Even when ladies are attempting to kill him, he won’t hurt them.
However, there might be some other interesting facts about Sanji that fans are probably unaware of. Oda revealed an intriguing fact about Sanji that will surely stun the fans who have long been a part of this journey.
Vinsmoke Sanji Is Based On An Actor From Quentin Tarantino’s Movie
In a world full of gruff and abrasive pirates, Sanji stands out a lot thanks to his distinct appearance and temperament. He always has a classy appearance, well-groomed long blond hair, and smokes a cigarette—even while he’s in the thick of a battle.
Fans were curious about Oda’s inspiration for Sanji because of his unusual outlook, and many of them suggested Leonardo di Caprio. But Eiichiro Oda disclosed in the SBS (the Q&A section) for Volume 68 that Steve Buscemi, who played Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, was the real model for the character.
Oda revealed:
Many people would ask about DiCaprio way back then. But as a matter of fact, Sanji’s model has a much more obscure background. I didn’t model him to the point of wanting an obvious physical resemblance; It was more like I hoped to get his attitude and mannerisms across. Sanji was based on the actor Steve Buscemi, especially his role in Reservoir Dogs.
He’s really super cool. The only person who ever guessed it correctly was an employee at Bandai, years ago.
Undoubtedly, the employee at Bandai must have been a massive fan of both Buscemi and One Piece to have made the huge leap. While the actor and the character may not have much in common anymore, early Sanji did. Fans of One Piece will never be able to view the Straw Hat chef the same way again, now that Oda’s inspiration has resurfaced.
Mr. Pink’s Iconic Look Lent Inspiration For Vinsmoke Sanji
The first full-length film that the renowned Quentin Tarantino ever directed, Reservoir Dogs, helped establish him as a cult favorite. In this independent movie, the narrative of a group of diamond thieves whose intended heist of a jewelry store goes horribly wrong is told.
Famous for its groundbreaking portrayal of violence, Reservoir Dogs also shows the moments leading up to and following the heist, but not the actual crime. A talented group of actors appear in it, including Buscemi in his breakthrough performance as the legendary Mr. Pink. The gang members all wear black suits, white shirts, and black ties as part of their uniform, which is also Sanji’s everyday attire.
The most astonishing thing about this story is that, up until Oda’s disclosure, nobody—aside from a single Bandai employee—had ever correctly guessed it. After 25 years of nonstop publishing and popularity, one can only imagine the number of strange and intriguing One Piece tales—like this one starring Sanji and actor Steve Buscemi—that remain untold.
