As rare as the Devil Fruits are in the One Piece world, Awakened Devil Fruits are even rarer. Devil Fruits are incredible sources of power in One Piece, scattered throughout the world, although it comes with a price: anyone who consumes a Devil Fruit loses the ability to swim.

As unfortunate as that is, it also grants superpowers unique to the users. There is also no way to get rid of the powers once consumed. Additionally, an individual can acquire the power of only one devil fruit, with the exception of Blackbeard for unknown reasons.

Why are Awakened Devil Fruits considered unique?

So what makes Awakened Devil Fruits so special? For one, it takes a lot of skill to awaken the Devil Fruit’s powers, and only a handful of characters have been able to master their skills enough to awaken their full potential. An Awakened Devil Fruit greatly boosts its user’s strength while also affecting their immediate surroundings.

All Devil Fruits are categorized into three different types depending on the kind of powers they grant: Paramecia (which grant a wide variety of strange superhuman abilities that generally do not fit into either of the other two types), Zoan (which allows a user to transform into a specific animal or an animal hybrid, including ones from prehistory or even mythology), and Logia (which gives a user the ability to create, control, and transform their body into a natural element).

Zoan type Devil Fruits allow its user to transform into a creature, either from the present times, ancient, or mythology. Zoans can be classified into three subtypes: Regular, Ancient, and Mythical, depending on the type. Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits are even rarer than Logia types, and it is even more difficult to awaken a Zoan type Devil Fruit. Interestingly, some One Piece characters have been able to pull it off!

There is one crucial factor that must be considered to understand why Zoan-type awakenings are uncommon. The recently released information indicates that devil fruits of the Zoan kind have a mind of their own.

The best illustration of how Zoan devil fruits can become problematic is the jailor creatures of Impel Down. The jailer creatures possessed devil fruits similar to those found in Zoan, but they were unable to change between human and animal form. They were unable to change back to human form and were stuck in that form permanently.

The reason behind their unique problem is self-explanatory. Their personalities were overtaken by the devil fruit’s will as a result of using their demon fruit awakening. The Impel Down jailers are considered failed Zoan awakenings since they are unable to control their devil fruits.

Monkey D. Luffy, Rob Lucci, Yamato, and Kaido are the only known possessors of the Zoan type Devil Fruit ability.
