Eiichiro Oda crafted an incredibly detailed world teeming with several characters. While some are devilishly smart and intelligent, others are not as blessed. The occasionally dumb acts performed by the Straw Hat Pirates add to the humor that is a trademark of One Piece, breaking the tension and providing a much-needed relief from the otherwise convoluted plot. Likewise, there are some of the wittiest characters within the Straw Hats whose contribution helps move the plot forward.

The Straw Hats are a good mix of brain and brawn (and somewhere in between), which highlights the bond and chemistry they have with each other. Here is the list of the Straw Hat Pirates ranked in order from the smartest to the dumbest.

No. 1 Nico Robin

Nico Robin
Nico Robin

It wouldn’t be unjustified to say that Nico Robin is the smartest Straw Hat. Considering that she is often feeding her brain by reading something, it is no wonder that she was able to teach herself to decipher an ancient language of the Poneglyphs on her own. A child prodigy, she also became an archaeologist at the tender age of 8. The rest of the Straw Hats also trust her strategies implicitly, and with good reason. This undoubtedly makes her the smartest character among the Straw Hat Pirates.

No. 2 Nami

Nami
Nami

The Straw Hats would be in the deep end without Nami’s wits and her inimitable navigation skills. Intelligence comes in a variety of forms, and Nami is street-smart and sly which helps her get out of tough spots. She also defeated several strong opponents such as Ms. Double Finger and Califa using her wit. Further, even her thievery skills come in handy on numerous occasions.

No. 3 Chopper

Chopper

He might be cute, but don’t take him as a fool! Chopper became a genius doctor at the age of 15. However, as the Straw Hat Pirates’ doctor, Chopper’s responsibilities go beyond medical assistance. He also developed a medicine called a “Rumble Ball”, which unlocks five more transformations unique to Chopper: Guard Point, Arm Point, Jump Point, Horn Point, and Monster Point.

No. 4 Sanji

Sanji
Sanji

Sanji is an underappreciated talent when it comes to his intelligence. His expertise in the culinary arts is second to none as he can replicate the taste and flavor of items he has only tasted once. But his intelligence goes beyond that. His Mr. Prince character outsmarted Sir Crocodile and intervened at the right time to save his crew mates.

No. 5 Franky

Franky
Franky

Franky is depicted as a goofy character, but under the surface lies a well of knowledge about machinery and engineering that could put Tony Stark to shame. Being trained by one of the best shipwrights in the world, Franky built a variety of strong ships and later used this innate knowledge to rebuild his own body after a horrific accident. Franky also crafted all the technology that appears in Sunny Go.

No. 6 Usopp

Usopp
Usopp

Usopp would have been dead meat had it not been for his wit and fast-thinking abilities. As a coward who prefers to avoid battles, the master of lies depends on his ability to trick people with tall tales. And even when his words fail to hit the mark, his skill with the trusty slingshot doesn’t. Usopp is the one who built Nami the Clima Tact, proving that he has quite an inventive mind.

No. 7 Jinbe

Jinbe
Jinbe

Jinbe is the honorary father figure of the Straw Hats with his calm and benign personality. As the helmsman of Sunny Go, he is quite wise. He is a master tactician who deduced Magellan’s plans when escaping Impel Down, otherwise known as an inescapable prison. His emotional intelligence is also marked by the scene where he comforts Luffy after Ace’s death.

No. 8 Brook

Brook
Brook

Brook is skilled as a musician who displays mastery over numerous instruments. His sense of dry humor never fails to make one smile, indicating that he has a sense of intelligence. But that hope is quickly dashed when his obsession with women’s panties surfaces. He also lacks a practical mindset which takes a few points off his intelligence stats.

No. 9 Roronoa Zoro

Zoro
Zoro

This list would be incomplete without one infamous Roronoa Zoro. He looks pretty intimidating, but he clearly isn’t too smart.

Not one to be outdone by Luffy, Zoro is almost as daft and senseless as his captain. His sense of direction (or lack thereof) has become a meme at this point.

No. 10 Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy
Luffy

This might not be surprising for the fans, as Luffy has demonstrated his intelligence by punching a Celestial Dragon. And that is just one of his many achievements. Despite being the Captain of the Straw Hats, Luffy is in a league of his own when it comes to making dumb decisions.
