Oliver Stone wanted to temporarily paralyze Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise appeared in 1989’s anti-war drama film based on the autobiography of Ron Kovic; Born on the Fourth of July as Ron Kovic and it was known that the director Oliver Stone wanted to temporarily paralyze the actor.
According to Andrew Morton’s biography Tom Cruise, the director had planned on injecting the actor with a chemical that would make him temporarily paralyzed because he thought it would be helpful for Cruise to identify with the role of a real-life Vietnam War veteran and activist.
But the insurance company shut down the idea of Stone trying to experiment with Cruise’s life for character reliability. The audience and the critics very well received the movie as the performances of the actors were highly appreciated, including Stone’s direction.
Born on the Fourth of July became the tenth highest-grossing film in 1989 and received eight nominations at the Academy Awards, including Cruise securing his first Academy Award nomination under the Best Actor category. Unfortunately, Cruise did not win, but the movie earned two awards that night.
Simon Pegg talks about working with Tom Cruise
Ahead of the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise’s co-stars recently, during an event, were asked about their experience of working with the iconic actor. Simon Pegg shared, “Of all the mist of stuff that’s around him, in the center of that mist is a generous, sweet guy who looks after everybody. He leads from the top down. And he’s kind of inspiring to be around. There’s no one else like him, he’s the last movie star of the old kind.”
Pegg who met the actor in 2006 when they were filming Mission: Impossible III, revealed that the actor’s caring nature has not altered a bit since the first day they met almost two decades ago. The actor noted that Cruise was very welcoming and made him feel at home the very first day they met and he was incredibly generous, adding that he gets to see the side of Cruise that everyone else wishes to see.
Simon Pegg also noted, “Over the 17 years that we’ve been friends, I feel lucky to get to see a part of him that everyone else wants to see, which is just the guy. And he is just a guy. He’s an extraordinary guy. He’s a guy who feels the obligation to the audience to risk his life for them to kind of entertain them.” He also revealed that the willingness Cruise has to risk his life displayed in a motorcycle scene in the upcoming movie is far and away the most dangerous thing they have ever attempted.
Hayley Atwell also chimed in to share her thoughts as she is the new addition to the Mission Impossible family and said, “I had read with Tom before, I knew that he was very present. He was very professional and he goes out of the way to make sure anyone around him in working capacity makes them feel very safe.” Actress Vanessa Kirby calls working with Cruise “inspiring and terrifying” at the same time.
Christopher McQuarrie calls working with Tom Cruise ‘unpredictable’
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who is excited and nervous as the day for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’s premiere comes near, recently shared how he was working with Tom Cruise. He also mentioned that Cruise’s commitment to doing his stunts even today has left everyone surprised and inspired.
He noted that the actor, who has always preferred to perform his stunts no matter how dangerous they could be, insisted on performing one of the dangerous stunts in the upcoming movie, which was speed-flying himself. The director pointed out that there are no limits when it comes to working with Cruise and everything is unpredictable when he is in the picture.
Talking about the desert sequence, the director said, “The desert sequence is something Tom and I have always dreamed about. The location just told us what to do. These things that we’re doing, while they seem to flow rather effortlessly, are actually very complicated and involve a lot of skill on Tom’s part. It really was the biggest set we’d ever worked on.”
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to bow in theaters July 12, with part two slated for the summer of 2024.
