‘Outlander’ Could Be Making a Game of Thrones-Style Mistake With Its Most Beloved Character- “true damaged character is coming out”
- Is Jamie Fraser's character arc just like Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones?
- Outlander fans having a tough time adjusting to the new character arc of Jamie Fraser.
- Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan talks about their peace with Outlander ending
Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novel Outlander, the historical drama of the same name was developed by Ronald D. Moore, starring Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan. The first season premiered in 2014 and followed a former World War II military nurse who time travels to the 18th century and falls in love with a Scottish Highlander.
Upon release, the series has gone on to receive positive responses from the critics as well as the audience. The show is currently in its seventh season and is going to conclude with its eighth and final season. But there is one similarity between Outlander and HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Fans question the character arc of Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser in Outlander
Part two of season seven of Outlander premiered on November 22, 2025, and is going to conclude on January 17, 2025. Ahead of its season finale, fans have now pointed out the fact that Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser on the show, has a similar character arc to Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones.
A Reddit user mentioned that Jamie Fraser in the second part of season seven does not feel like the Jamie Fraser they have been witnessing for such a long time. The user mentioned that they did not like how the makers had completely turned his character just the opposite of what they had been watching.
Another user noted that Jamie Fraser had been put on a pedestal for such a long time and was called King of Men. But according to them, the author Diana Gabaldon wrote the character in a way that as seasons progress, ‘his true damaged character would come out’ and fans are finally able to see it.
A third Reddit user who has read the book clarifies that in the book, Jamie hits John only two times, but he did it three times in the show, which the makers could have added to make the viewers angry with the character. The character arc of Jamie Fraser seems to have changed, and it is very similar to that of Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen.
The Mother of Dragons was put on a pedestal throughout the entire run of the show, only to make her character go ‘mad’ in the last season which led to Jon Snow stabbing her. Human beings are flawed, and there is no denying that, at times, it’s okay to let that human side of a character come out, but it’s hard to digest the fact that the character one has been hyping for all season changes their actions in a flick of a second.
While the majority of the viewers understand the actions of Jamie Fraser, some of them are having a hard time adjusting to the character arc change because they are used to seeing the character in a certain way. It was hard and surreal for the fans of GOT to see Daenerys die after eight seasons of hard work to get her Iron Throne.
One of the reasons why fans did not like the final season of GOT was because of the ending. According to them, it did not make any sense for the female protagonist to die! Similarly, the Outlander fans are having a hard time adjusting to the new arc of Jamie Fraser.
Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan talk about coming to terms with Outlander’s end
Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire and Jamie are two of the most beloved fictional characters in the industry, and while Season 7 Part 2 is currently airing, the actors have wrapped up the shoot for the final season.
During an interview with Collider, the actors talk about how they made peace with their show coming to an end. The actress shared,
Sam Heughan added that the last day was emotional, but so were the days, weeks, and months before it. He added that sometimes they’d not realize that their emotions were flowing because it was the last season, pointing out that they cried during the final read-through but eventually made peace with it.
However, the story of Outlander is not finished even if the show ends with its eight seasons. A spin-off series is already in development focusing on Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian and Ellen Fraser.
