The show, a spin-off of the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, sees John Cena in the role of the titular DC antihero Christopher Smith, better known as Peacemaker. The jingoistic mercenary won everyone’s hearts in the first season and fans have been evidently waiting for the second season for quite some time.

James Gunn has been the mastermind behind some of the best superhero movies to date. For instance, MCU’s the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and DCEU’s The Suicide Squad. So, when he presented the idea for a spin-off on the latter with the focus on Peacemaker, HBO would have been a fool to reject it.

HBO was not the only one who was able to see Gunn’s dedication and expertise. So, by late 2022, Gunn and Peter Safran, both of whom had given valuable advice to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, were appointed as the co-CEOs of DC Studios. They were handed over the control of films, animation, and TV projects based on DC characters.

The duo decided that they would reboot the franchise to help it get out of the trenches. This made everyone wary of the direction Peacemaker would go since it was not very concerned about the events of DCEU. In a Threads comment in late 2023, Gunn confirmed that the second season would be canon to DCU.

Gunn, who seems to love interacting with fans on Threads, recently confirmed that the second season would be released in 2025. To be more specific, he mentioned that it will happen after the David Corenswet-starrer Superman is released. Fans are understandably overjoyed with this news because it was speculated that it will not be released until 2026.

Apart from the fact that this new season will be a part of the DCU, Gunn has also emphasized that the first season is not a part of this overarching universe. This implies that while the new season will have elements from the first season, the plot will greatly contribute to the narrative of the DCU.

Although the plot details continue to be elusive, fans can seek relief in the fact that Gunn has written all episodes and will be directing three episodes (via Deadline). In addition, Greg Mottola will be directing a few episodes.

John Cena is bound to return as Christopher Smith. Most of the main cast is expected to return for the new season. Further, Gunn also announced that Mean Girls and Saturday Night Live actor Tim Meadows will join the cast as Langston Fleury.

Peacemaker is available for streaming on Max.
