Playing Iron Man Too Many Times Has Destroyed Robert Downey Jr’s Acting Skills, Claims MCU Star Himself
Robert Downey Jr is Hollywood’s most adored actors. He has been part of various successful movies. The actor rose to prominence after entering the Marvel franchise. Downey Jr played the famous superhero Iron Man in the MCU. His first film Iron Man, which came out in 2008, launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a recent interview for his upcoming blockbuster film Oppenheimer, the Sherlock Holmes actor shared how playing Iron Man has affected his acting skills.

Robert Downey Jr launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his 2008’s Iron Man. After the film, the actor instantly became a fan-favorite superhero. Downey Jr’s role in the MCU helped him to rise to fame in the entertainment industry.
The 58-year-old star debuted as Tony Stark in the 2008 picture Iron Man directed by Jon Favreau. He then reprised the role in many more Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. Iron Man became the most recognizable character in the MCU and had an important role in the overall plot.
The Dolittle actor decided to play the role because of Iron Man’s intricacy and allure. The task gave him the chance to advance his profession and impress a huge audience with his skills. However, in a recent interview with The New York Times Magazine, the actor confessed how playing Iron Man affected his acting abilities. The star was worried that playing Tony Stark/Iron Man for over a decade would affect his ability to play other characters.
Talking about the risk of playing Iron Man for 11 years, the actor said, “You start to wonder if a muscle you have hasn’t atrophied.”
When asked if he worried about how Iron Man would have affected his acting, Downey Jr. responded
“Yes. 100%, and I knew there was a point where Christopher Nolan was endorsing, let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things.”
Robert Downey Jr’s character Iron Man last appeared in Avengers: Endgame, when he sacrificed himself to vanquish the villain Thanos. The 58-year-old is starring as Lewis Strauss in Nolan’s atomic bomb epic Oppenheimer, which is scheduled to release this month.

Robert Downey Jr is thrilled to be part of Oppenheimer
There is no doubt that Christopher Nolan has contributed to several excellent Hollywood films. Each of his films has been meticulously crafted. One of the most anticipated films of the year is Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy played the lead in the film. The biographical drama movie also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr.
The Marvel star plays Lewis Strauss in Nolan’s Magnum Opus. Strauss worked for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for two terms, serving as its chairman in his second.
The film gave Downey Jr a chance to flex his acting muscles that he couldn’t in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor while speaking about his gratifying experience said,
“Coming from that other place, entering the box-office weekend-dominating place, then going into this spot now where I’m happy that I’m in this quality product. I’m happy that I regained my connection with a more purist approach to making movies.”
Working with Nolan also encouraged the 58-year-old to return to a much more realistic approach to making films. Oppenheimer is set to launch in theaters on July 21, 2023.
