The book Spare covers the journey of the Duke from his childhood and follows till his marriage to Markle. Recently the rift between the royal brothers was revealed through a leak of one of the chapters of the book.
How Prince Harry recreated the night of his mother’s death
Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997, which was one of the worst days of Prince Harry’s life. He was 12 years old and lost his mother to a fatal car crash. The Princess of Wales died in the Pont de L’Alma tunnel, in Paris, after her car crashed and she suffered fatal injuries. She was accompanied by her boyfriend at the time of her death. They just had dinner in the Ritz before entering the tunnel.
According to the new excerpt of his memoir that leaked in Spain accidentally before its release, the prince recreated the incident of his mother’s death. He needed closure and wished to end the pain that followed after her death. When the Duke of Sussex was 23, he visited Pairs for the Rugby World Cup semi-final. There he requested his chauffeur to drive at the same speed as his mum’s car, 65 miles per hour. The prince wrote in his book,
“Off we went, weaving through traffic, cruising past the Ritz, where Mummy had her last meal, with her boyfriend, that August night. Then we came to the mouth of the tunnel. We zipped ahead, went over the lip at the tunnel’s entrance, the bump that supposedly sent Mummy’s Mercedes veering off course.”
He always imagined the tunnel as a treacherous tube that was inherently perilous, but during his recreation of the event, they barely felt the lip. The Duke, after 10 years, tried to get some answers about Princess Diana’s death.
In his memoir he acknowledges that decades of trying to piece together what transpired on that fatal night, only to be talked out of reopening the princess’s death investigation. He even drove with Prince William through the tunnel where their mum died to get an idea of what happened that night.
