SUMMARY
  • Quentin Tarantino has only made 9 movies in his career of over two decades.
  • He did not hold back his criticism for movies extremely short theatrical run before moving to streaming.
  • Although he has never been to rush, he has a good reason for not getting back to work now.

Martin Scorsese might not be on board with all the modern aspects of the entertainment industry, but he is not retiring anytime soon. However, the same cannot be said about Quentin Tarantino, who already announced that his tenth film will be his directorial swan song.

Recently, Tarantino made some comments that are very telling of the reason behind his decision to stop making movies at least in part. In addition to those views, he also revealed why he is not rushing to make his final film although he has been working on something lately.

Quentin Tarantino‘s start in the industry was not easy. In fact, for the longest time, he could not make a movie of his own although that is what he wanted to do his whole life. He began his journey as a scriptwriter and made his first movie, Reservoir Dogs in 1992. It is considered one of the greatest independent films ever and gained more popularity after the release of his next film, Pulp Fiction.

Since then, he has made seven more films, and the last of those, namely, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was released in 2019. The movie, featuring an ensemble cast, was a commercial success. It was nominated in 10 categories at the Academy Awards and won Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Production Design.

At the 2025 edition of the Sundance Film Festival, he reflected on his disdain about the fact that movies get very small theatrical windows these days before moving to streaming services like Netflix (via X).

What the f*ck is a movie now? Something that plays in theaters for a token release for four f*cking weeks, all right? And by the second week, you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. […] It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last f*cking year of movies. And that was a sh*t deal as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse.

He went as far as comparing theatrical releases of films to “show pony exercise”. He is certainly not the first filmmaker to have his reservations about the streaming of films but might be one of the first to be this very vocal about it.

Last year in April, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Tarantino was no longer working on The Movie Critic, which was going to be his final film. This has led many to wonder what it would be and a million other such questions, but he is definitely going to take his own sweet time to do it (via The Independent).

I’m in no hurry to actually jump into production. I have been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns five, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I am in America, I am writing. When I am in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father. The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6.

He believes his daughter is smart enough that she will understand when he has to leave for work. That, however, does not mean that he has been absolutely not in touch with his creative side as he revealed that he has been working on a play that may or may not serve as the source material for his next movie.
