The crime drama series True Detective’s first season was aired in 2014. Represented by talented actor duo Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the first season of True Detective went on to become a massive hit. The second season was launched in June 2015. About Time actor Rachel McAdams played a significant role in the second season of HBO’s crime drama.

As reported by the media outlet Variety in 2014, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Vince Vaughn, and Colin Ferell featured in the second season of True Detective. However, Rachel McAdams had almost lost her role to The Sinner star, Jessica Biel. Before confirming the Marvel star, actors like Jessica Biel, and Malin Akerman were considered for the role of Ani Bezzerides in True Detective season 2.

Due to schedule issues, Rachel McAdams was not expected to be a part of True Detective season 2 as when she was approached for the role, the actor was about to start filming for Spotlight, which revolved around the Catholic Church s*x scandal. The second season of True Detective dealt with an attack on her pimp Ledo Amarilla’s meth lab, and the aftermath of the lengthy shootout.

Rachel McAdams Talks About Her True Detective Character Ani Bezzerides

During an interview with the media outlet Marie Claire in 2015, Rachel McAdams spoke about her sports drama Southpaw, True Detective, and the rebellious character of Ani Bezzerides. The Doctor Strange actor revealed it was one of the best roles in her acting career. While talking about her True Detective role, she said-

“What I love is dropping into someone else’s life and exploring it. I love the exploration of someone who has such a different background from you. That exploration runs to compassion, and to cracking yourself open and creating more understanding of how weird and amazing life is.”

She further explained-

“I love that she’s not the girlfriend or the wife. She doesn’t really care what everyone thinks; she feels no responsibility for other people’s feelings. She’s not trying to be charming, which isn’t always the case with a leading lady. There’s [usually] sort of a responsibility to be a little bit likeable… Not that you want to be a horrendous character, just a little more human.” 

Rachel McAdams even mentioned she likes doing negative characters. She said-

“I prefer to be a villainess. There’s something a bit more delicious about their wickedness.”
