Real Reason Why Station 19 Is Ending After Season 7, Explained
- Station 19 began as Grey Anatomy's spinoff but eventually gained ground away from the mothership.
- Despite great numbers and story, the show was canceled after just 7 seasons.
- While some claim the show had run its course, many believe ABC was trying to avoid competition on its network.
When the original show runs season after season, it’s understandably saddening for the spinoff to wrap up much sooner. Fans wanted Station 19 to have more seasons and storylines that could give them an insight into one aspect of Grey’s Anatomy world. Alas, the show came to an end after just 7 seasons.
Station 19 aired its last episode in May 2024. Fans have been campaigning ever since to bring back the show with all its cast members. But that doesn’t seem possible in the near future. In the meantime, let’s take a look at why Station 19 was canceled after just 7 seasons.
911 switched networks to Station 19’s ABC
One of the biggest reasons that can be interpreted in ABC’s decision to cancel Station 19 is the massive show 911 coming on board from Fox. Rather than have two competing shows on the same network, ABC perhaps decided to cancel Station 19 and keep 911 which is higher in terms of scale and popularity.
The Hollywood strikes certainly played a role in this twist of fate as it delayed Station 19’s next season and impacted its writer roster to a larger extent. It further affected the budget and economics of various networks that struggled during the strikes. On the other hand, network executives also felt that the show had run its course and must be given a chance to wrap up with dignity.
Jaina Lee Ortiz: “It’s part of the business”
Well, we all know a show cannot go on forever no matter how much we try. Station 19 wrapped up its storyline and ended on a good note which is more than what we can say for most television shows out there. The story got its chance to wrap up for good and give every character a fitting story.
Jaina Lee Ortiz, who plays Andy Herrera on the show, told Hello!,
I feel tremendously grateful for the show and what it has done for me in my career and also my personal life. I was able to grow and learn new things about myself as an actor, and having that self-exploration throughout the seasons has been so beneficial in my life. Am I heartbroken? Yes. But do I understand that this is part of the business? Yes. Am I optimistic for the future? Of course, and the fact that I was able to have a piece of this, whether it was one season or seven seasons, that itself is something that I will always cherish.
All the cast members, including the showrunner Shonda Rimes, never saw it coming. The show was thriving and doing well in terms of viewership as well. Needless to say, they are all willing to come back in case the network chooses to revive the show in the future.
Station 19 got to say a proper goodbye
The people involved in making the show were happy that they at least got to say a proper goodbye to the story. According to Deadline, ABC told Station 19 before they filmed season 7 that it would be their last. Despite just having 10 episodes, the procedural drama could be crafted so that every character got an ending they deserved.
Station 19 shows the myriad of aspects of life that surround the first responders of the Seattle Fire Department. Much like Grey’s Anatomy and the whirlwind of emotions it features, Station 19 was no different as it always kept the audience on the hook. The star cast as thankful to learn prior to the cancelation and prepared the last season with more thought.
