“Remember we know a lot of folks who died during this”: Whoopi Goldberg Strongly Disagreed With Dr Phil Over COVID Lockdowns For School Children
People have repeatedly questioned the validity of lockdowns and vaccinations during one of the worst times the modern public has seen, the COVID-19 pandemic. Lines between celebrities and the masses were blurred as everyone suffered during the same, albeit some much less than others. The conversation still continues as people talk about the measures taken to curb the virus and their subsequent consequences on the public.
Dr Phil Criticises School Closures
In lieu of a worldwide lockdown to curb the spread of the deadly virus, everything from schools and colleges to offices and entertainment places like malls and theatres were shut down. People were discouraged from coming into contact with each other and urged to maintain social distancing. In a recent appearance on talk show The View, Dr Phil McGraw spoke about how shutting down schools was not a smart move and how it impacted children adversely.
“In, like, ’08, ’09, smartphones came on, and kids started, they stopped living their lives and starting watching people live their lives, and so we saw the biggest spike and the highest levels of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and suicidality, since records have ever been kept, and it’s just continued on and on and on. And then Covid hit 10 years later, and the same agencies that knew that, were the agencies that shut down the schools for two years. Who does that? Who takes away the support system for these children? Who takes it away and shuts it down?”
He further elaborated on the fact that children whose parents abused them physically and emotionally suffered the most. They were left alone at home with no one to help them get out of that mess. Moreover, their future was put in jeopardy as the years passed by without the kids learning or progressing in their education.
Whoopi Goldberg Gives an Apt Reply
The American comedian and television personality, Whoopi Goldberg, and other hosts of the talk show gave a fitting reply to Dr Phil. They emphasized how the intrinsic elements were prioritized first. Children were kept at home to save their lives since the pandemic destroyed families and took people’s lives without a second thought.
“But there was also a pandemic going on, they were trying to save children’s lives,” host Sunny Hostin said.
“They were trying to save kids’ lives. Remember, we know a lot of folks who died during this. So, people weren’t laying around eating bonbons,” Goldberg added. Which, Dr Phil said that schoolchildren were not dying. Annoyed, Goldberg retorted, “Well, you know what, we’re lucky. Maybe we’re lucky they didn’t because we kept them out of the places they could be sick because no one wanted to believe we had an issue!”
The conversation continued with the hosts and Dr Phil debating on the impact of the virus on children and how their lives were spared. Dr Phil didn’t seem to realize that the children were less vulnerable because they were instructed to stay inside their homes. He insisted on depicting how the lockdown was more deadly for the people than the pandemic itself.
