SUMMARY
  • Alec Baldwin, once a Hollywood staple, faces a career shift.
  • It is clear from the poor reviews of his recent film, ‘Crescent City.’
  • This follows the ‘Rust’ incident, which led to a fatal accident.

Alec Baldwin was once a Hollywood mainstay. He starred alongside A-listers like Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio in films such as Mission: Impossible – Fallout and The Departed. The actor, famous for his portrayal of roguish characters, has led many blockbuster films.

From The Shadow and Malice to Pearl Harbor and The Cooler, he’s had his fair share of leading man moments. The Amityville native has also shined as Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock and nailed his depiction of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

Not that, Baldwin has been pretty good at collecting awards, too. He’s been nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Tony. On top of that, he’s won three Primetime Emmys, three Golden Globes, and eight Screen Actors Guild Awards.

However, since the 2021 Rust shooting incident, where Baldwin discharged a prop gun that tragically killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, there’s been a significant change in his career. His latest movie, Crescent City (released yesterday on digital platforms), reflects this shift, as reviews haven’t been flattering.

Crescent City’s Reviews Show Alec Baldwin’s Hollywood Decline

Directed by R. J. Collins, Crescent City is a movie about detectives with hidden secrets trying to solve murders. Even with famous actors like Alec Baldwin, Terrence Howard, and Esai Morales, the plot is hard to follow and not very creative.

Reviewers from Yahoo! Canada point out that the film wrongly uses the name Crescent City because it’s actually set in Little Rock, Arkansas. Besides this, critics find the story messy, full of clichéd and confusing ideas. Variety’s top critic Joe Layden wrote on Rotten Tomatoes:

Blockbuster store shelves used to be overburdened to the point of near-collapse with unremarkable trifles such as this.

Blu-ray.com reviewer Brian Orndorf wrote:

Clumsily tries to be a whodunit, but mostly remains a whocares as little of the endeavor becomes passably interesting.

Baldwin returns to a tough-guy role nearly 20 years later with Crescent City. Earlier, he starred as an angry Boston cop in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. However, based on the reviews, this new role might not have the same impact on fans.

But since the Hollywood star faced a criminal trial over the fatal Rust shooting in 2021, he might still draw interest from those curious about his latest work.

Joel Souza, the director of Rust, has recently spoken publicly for the first time since the tragic on-set shooting in October 2021. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Souza shared his experience and the aftermath of the incident, which left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and Souza himself seriously injured.

The 51-year-old described the shooting as a shocking experience, recalling how he felt like he had been hit with a bat. He was standing behind Hutchins when the gun went off, hitting her in the chest and him in the shoulder. The pain was really severe, and his right side felt both numb and painfully sore. The bullet came very close to hitting his lung and spine.

Looking back on his survival, Souza admitted he wasn’t thankful at first and even wished he wouldn’t wake up the next day. Despite his early feelings of despair, he chose to finish the film to honor Hutchins’ memory and provide financial support to her family.

Crescent City went straight to digital platforms instead of theaters. Watch it on Apple TV!
