“Robbed”: Marvel Fans Are Furious After Spider-Man 2 Faces Disaster Fate at The Game Awards 2023 Despite 7 Nominations
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the third installment from Insomniac Games, was a massive hit when it came out. This smash hit broke many records, including being the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game over 24 hours. It sold more than 2.5 million copies in one day and roughly 5 million copies in 11 days. It can be ranked as the best-selling game of October in the US.
It also had raving reviews from critics and seven nominations for the Game Awards. But despite being such a popular game with seven nominations to its name, it received zero awards. It was quite a disastrous feat for Spider-Man 2, and fans are furious over it.
Spider-Man 2 faces a disastrous fate at the Game Awards and fans are not happy about it
The seven categories Spider-Man 2 was nominated for include Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance (Yuri Lowenthal), Best Action/Adventure Game, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Audio Design. Despite being one of the best games of 2023, the Game of the Year title seemed a bit far-fetched for it since the category already held titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, and Resident Evil 4 (remake).

Innovation in Accessibility was a category nomination that was interesting for Spider-Man 2. The game improved its accessibility features by adding challenge-level modifiers to navigate difficulty settings and shortcuts that allow players to assign their choice of function among many on the left or right D-pad buttons. Insomniac Games will continue its journey of accessibility with options for audio descriptions, a screen reader, and captions.
Yuri Lowenthal was praised by both gamers and critics alike for his performance as Spider-Man, and he had a pretty decent shot at winning. The other categories were also straightforward, and Spider-Man 2 had a decent shot at winning.
However, despite having seven nominations, Spider-Man 2 did not win in a single category at the Game Awards. It was heartbreaking for the fans when Discussing Film posted the update on X (formerly Twitter). Many felt like they were robbed, while others called it rigged.
They won awards in my heart

The last PlayStation exclusive to win the Game of the Year title at the Game Awards was The Last of Us 2. However, for many fans, it fades in front of the brilliance that Spider-Man 2 brought to the table. That’s why the fans are even more upset at the loss that Spider-Man 2 incurred at the Game Awards.
Spider-Man 2 allegedly cut a lot of Venom content from the game
According to a report by YouTuber Evan Filarca on Twitter, Spider-Man 2 cut down on a lot of Venom content in the game. The YouTuber attended Fan Expo 2023, which was attended by voice actors from the game, Nadji Jeter (Miles Morales) and Tony Todd (Venom). It was here that Todd revealed that the game only used 10% of the recorded dialogue for Venom.
It is quite surprising since Venom already has a pretty lengthy script in the game. Especially after Venom gets hold of Harry Osborn, he is quite a blabbermouth whenever he is on screen. It also makes sense for the studio to cut down on Venom content.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20, 2023.
