Hugh Jackman always maintained an impressive physique during his X-Men franchise time and it is nothing short of spectacular since the actor claimed that he never took help from steroids. So, it is not surprising that Robert Downey Jr. turned to Hugh Jackman to get jacked up for his Iron Man role in the MCU.

Although Marvel had no requirement of a godly physique from Downey Jr., he wanted to give his all to the role. It was a pretty difficult time in Robert Downey Jr.’s life as he just recovered from his substance abuse issues and was having trouble finding a footing in Hollywood as no one was willing to take a chance on him due to his reckless past. Iron Man would later prove to be Downey Jr.’s biggest role in his career, which got him global recognition and fame. So, it was only natural for him to prepare himself the best for the most important role of his career.

Hugh Jackman Was Robert Downey Jr.’s Savior To Help Him Bulk Up For His Iron Man Role

Iron Man is a comic book character mostly known for his mind, not his muscles. However, nobody minded when Robert Downey Jr. stepped into the role, all toned up. This “genius billionaire playboy philanthropist” swooped the world with his charm from the very first film, saving Marvel from the verge of bankruptcy, and he did it with a chiseled jaw and broad shoulder muscles.

While talking to Britain’s Notebook Magazine (via. Contact Music), Hugh Jackman opened up about how Downey Jr. turned to his pal in times of dire need.

“Half of Hollywood (plays superheroes) now… When Robert (Downey, Jr.) first got the part of Iron Man he reached out to me and said, ‘Mate, can you just share with me the diet and how to get in shape?’ because he knew I wasn’t in shape before it, so there’s a little bit of that (sharing that goes on between actors).”

One would be surprised to know that Marvel did not even ask him to do that. According to what Downey Jr. told Cinema (via. Showbiz CheatSheet),

“They said I’d be fine to start shooting the way I looked, but I took it upon myself to get into really good shape.”

Hugh Jackman had done three X-Men movies by the time Robert Downey Jr. entered Marvel. Jackman was also gearing up for his standalone movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine when Downey Jr. wanted his help. Before X-Men, Hugh Jackman was averse to the idea of going to the gym and building muscle. He even used to find it absurd. His transformation and dedication to the role would always be legendary. So, it is no wonder Robert Downey Jr. went to the maestro himself to get some advice.
