- Cavill's cameo fuels speculation and possibilities about his potential future as Wolverine in the MCU.
Spoiler Alert!
Deadpool & Wolverine is finally out, and it is everything fans hoped for and more. The team-up between Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman’s short-tempered mutant brought a lot of action, humor, and most importantly, cameos.
After hanging up his claws in 2017’s Logan, many thought it was the last time anyone would see Jackman as Wolverine. But Deadpool has a way of making the impossible happen. However, amid all that, there is one fan-favorite cameo that gives a nod to another action franchise.
Henry Cavill’s Mission: Impossible Nod in Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine came with a lot of cameos, but Henry Cavill‘s appearance as a Wolverine variant is probably the most memorable one. While traveling the multiverse in search of his Wolverine, who can be an anchor being for his universe, Deadpool comes across ‘The Cavillrine’.
In the scene, Cavill was working on his motorcycle while smoking a cigar, just like the classic Wolverine. As Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool appears and starts approaching him, Cavill gives a quick downward jerk with both arms to draw his adamantium claws.
It was enough for eagle-eyed viewers to recall Cavill’s iconic arm-reloading move from Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Having that gesture in the movie added an extra layer of meta-humor to an already meta-heavy film. Cavill has previously commented on the arm-reloading move that inspired the Wolverine claw reveal.
Good catch, I didn’t notice the Mission Impossible reference!

In an appearance on Happy Sad Confused podcast, he explained that his muscles used to get sore due to all the actions and continuous motions, especially the bathroom fight scene as it took a lot of time to complete the shoot. So to warm up his tendons, Cavill subconsciously did that move, which ultimately became an iconic move.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall again and acknowledges Cavill’s Wolverine while indirectly dissing DC for ruining his Superman character. He says in the scene,
The Cavillrine. Legends are true. And may I say, sir, on behalf of all humanity, this just feels right. We will treat you so much better than those sh*t f*cks down the street.
The cameo is more than just a fun nod for fans, as it came after a lot of rumors and fan castings. There were rumors in 2020 that Cavill might appear as Wolverine in Captain Marvel 2. While those rumors didn’t pan out, it seems like Marvel was listening to fans’ demands all this time.
Future of Henry Cavill’s Wolverine in the MCU
The big question that comes to every Cavillrine fan right now is- Will Henry Cavill become the MCU’s new Wolverine? It can be a possibility, especially after Cavill’s recent departure from the DCEU as Superman.
However, Marvel has been quite secretive about their plans for the X-Men in the MCU. There are rumors of a script being written, but there is neither a director for the movie nor any release date set. Some speculate that the X-Men might not make their full MCU debut until Phase 7, which is years away.
Cavill is currently 41 years old, and Hugh Jackman was 32 when he first appeared as Wolverine. If Marvel is planning for a long-term Wolverine, they might opt for a younger actor. However, Cavill’s popularity among fans and proven superhero chops could make him an attractive choice regardless of age.
The way he looked in Deadpool & Wolverine also solidified his possibility as the next Wolverine even more. Only time will tell if Cavill will ever be seen in claws, but for now, it can be said that Hugh Jackman is not the only one to portray the Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now running in theaters.
