SUMMARY
  • Ryan Reynolds' marketing strategy for Deadpool & Wolverine played a huge role in the movie's success.
  • Justin Theroux is reportedly trying to follow the trail Reynolds' left behind and a source claims it is giving "wannabe energy".
  • Theroux was involved with the marketing of the movie Tropic Thunder, which he also co-wrote with Ben Stiller and Etan Cohen.

Apart from Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, one key factor that has made Deadpool and Wolverine so successful is Ryan Reynolds’ marketing strategy. The Proposal star spearheaded the marketing campaign for the movie with such gusto that even he could not have stopped it from becoming a blockbuster.

Both Marvel Studios and Reynolds (and Blake Lively, if you will), have benefited from the success of this film. So, it might not sound too surprising that an A-lister like Justin Theroux has allegedly become somewhat insecure over Reynolds’ huge triumph.

Reynolds did well with the marketing of the R-rated film. From being social media savvy to cross-promotions and collaborations, he left no stone unturned. Now, Theroux is looking to follow in The Adam Project star’s footsteps and it is way too obvious. A source has divulged to In Touch that The Leftovers star is in “full Ryan Reynolds mode”.

He did help out on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and he is an idea factory, but the ‘wannabe energy’ is palpable.

The source has suggested that Theroux should forge his own way instead of trying to follow in Reynolds’ footsteps.

Justin is always chasing somebody because he’s so heavily invested in his career and his personal reputation and trying to up his game, but at the end of the day, it just feels like he’s trying too hard, and it’s kind of pathetic.

This might be Theroux’s attempt at modernizing his marketing strategy so even if he is following in Reynolds’ footsteps, there seems to be no harm as long as the movie performs well. That said, the former’s most recent outing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has done well at the box office, but not as well as Deadpool & Wolverine.

Just like Ryan Reynolds, Justin Theroux is a man of many talents. Besides his roles in popular comedies like Zoolander and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, he has also appeared in the satirical horror American Psycho and the psychological thriller The Girl on the Train. Further, he has directed the rom-com Dedication and co-wrote the scripts for blockbuster movies like Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2.

To top it all, much like Reynolds, Theroux also takes an interest in the marketing of the movies he works on. The primary example of this is Tropic Thunder. The leads of this movie performed sketches at the MTV VMAs and the reality show American Idol.

They also did an exclusive screening of the film for the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton’s service members and their families. Further, Theroux himself set up fake websites and even made a fake documentary about the film’s development. The efforts put into the marketing were very apparent.
