Imagine how strange it must be to encounter a comic book character who not only resembles you, but also tempts you with an extreme desire to portray that character in a movie. Similarly, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is one of the most important characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which certainly resembles the Captain Marvel actor.

The fictional character General Nicholas Joseph ‘Nick’ Fury is portrayed as a different Nick Fury in comic books published by the Ultimate Marvel division of Marvel Comics. Jackson, however, wasn’t completely convinced that the film adaptation of Nick Fury would resemble his comic book counterpart.

Samuel L. Jackson has a significant role in every Ultimate Marvel comic, first appearing in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, and Ultimate X-Men and then frequently reappearing in Ultimate Spider-Man. And, at long last, landing a regular, recurring position as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a reimagining of the Avengers.

What Samuel L. Jackson Thought When He Noticed ‘Nick Fury’ Resembled Him

Samuel L. Jackson was unaware that the Nick Fury character in the comic books published by Marvel had been created using his likeness at first. He has always enjoyed reading and collecting comic books. Thus, the American actor and producer first became aware of Nick Fury’s sudden resemblance to him while conducting his usual comic book shopping.

In 2019, the 74-year-old actor recalled to Comic Book, “I still buy comic books, so I go to this store in Los Angeles, Golden Apple, and I was in there one day and I’m passing the rack and I see this thing, The Ultimates, and I go, ‘Wow, it looks like me.’”

Ironically, the fictional Fury described the actor as the only character he would want to play in a film.

He Wasn’t Entirely Sure That ‘Nick Fury’ Would Continue In The Marvel Movies

Samuel L. Jackson tried to find out more about the situation as soon as he learned that his likeness was being used in the comics. He even asked one of his handlers at that time to speak with Marvel.

Given that his handler had no prior knowledge of the comic book character or this Ultimates book, he informed her of both. “It’s a comic book, it’s got my image in it, and it talks about me being in a movie, and then she said, ‘Let me call somebody.’”

She then called Marvel, who responded by saying they were considering making these films and hoped he would play Nick Fury if they did. The Pulp Fiction actor excitedly added, “I’m like, ‘For real?”

He later would also tell former Marvel producer, Avi Arad that he was interested in playing Nick Fury. He questioned whether Fury’s new image from the comics would translate to the big screen.

The Glass actor once said in an interview with Mark Walters, “Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing if Nick Fury is actually gonna stay black when they get ready to make a movie.”

However, Jackson had previously imagined himself as a different Marvel Superhero before Nick Fury.

He has always wished he could be Iron Man. Since the person who created this stuff is a reasonably wealthy individual. Still, Nick Fury would be fantastic. “I’ve been reading Nick Fury since The Howling Commandos,” he said.

For the unversed, in the Iron Man (2008) post-credits scene, Fury is introduced as he visits Tony Stark at his Malibu home to discuss the Avengers Initiative.
