SUMMARY
  • Samuel L. Jackson has played some of the most iconic characters ever in the history of cinema.
  • One of his most iconic roles is Nick Fury and his favorite happens to be from a pre-multiversal MCU movie.
  • The Pulp Fiction actor wondered how long he would have to live to make his first 9 Marvel movies.

It took Samuel L. Jackson to switch through two majors – marine biology and architecture – to realize that drama was his true calling, but once he knew that, there was no going back. Now, over five decades later, he is not only the highest-grossing actor of all time but also one of the most recognized ones worldwide.

One of the roles that Jackson has become synonymous with over the years is his Marvel character, Nick Fury. He might not be a superhero in the franchise, but his role is as important as those of the superheroes, if not more.

Samuel L. Jackson made his feature film debut in 1972 with the movie Together for Days. He made his professional theatre debut in 1980 and rose to prominence in Hollywood with his roles in movies like Mo’ Better Blues and Jungle Fever. Then came Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction which catapulted the actor to international stardom.

The ‘Ultimate’ version of Nick Fury was built in Marvel Comics after Jackson’s likeness with his consent. So, naturally, when the time came for the live-action Fury to jump into action on the screen, Marvel Studios got the Die Hard with a Vengeance star tied in for a long run.

When asked about his favorite Fury moment from the films in an interview with GQ where he was breaking down his most iconic roles, he revealed it to be the one in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

My favorite Nick Fury moment is Winter Soldier, when he’s in that car. I mean that’s like quintessential Nick Fury. It’s like, okay, no panic. It’s cool figuring out, let’s make the next move, make the next move, make the next move. Bada**, bada** sh*t.

The car chase in the busy streets of Washington D.C., which ended with Fury cutting a hole in the middle of the car with his high-tech laser to escape the wrath of Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, is easily one of the best street-level action sequences in the MCU.

Jackson has embodied Nick Fury in over a dozen Marvel movies, including the Avengers series and standalone like The Marvels. However, he had initially just signed a nine-movie deal and was worried about how long he would have to live to make those movies.

In the interview with GQ, the A Time to Kill actor opened up about his concerns regarding the same. He said:

How long do you have to stay alive to make nine movies? It’s not the quickest process in the world. I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years. That’s kind of crazy! Oh shit, I’m using up my contracts. It worked out.

Little did Jackson know that he was in for one hell of a ride, one that he seems to enjoy even today. He has previously clarified that he never gets tired of playing Fury because he finds it fun, so rest assured, fans do not have to worry about Fury getting replaced anytime soon.
