Saturday Night Live Helped Ryan Gosling Earn $12,500,000 in Barbie
Ryan Gosling Barbie has painted the world in pink. The Greta Gerwig movie has already become a critical and commercial success around the world. The marketing strategy covered by the American doll brand Mattle and billion-dollar production house Warner Bros has left no stone unturned to take the movie to almost every corner of the world.
Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Ken in the movie Barbie has taken the critics aback. To display the blonde-haired, washboard abs, and floral print attire- all of this needed a lot of convincing by his co-star Margot Robbie and the Academy Award-nominated director Greta Gerwig.
How Saturday Night Live Skit Helped Ryan Gosling Make Millions In Barbie?
During an interview on the SmartLess podcast, Greta Gerwig spoke about her movie Barbie, and how she ended up finding that perfect Ken in The Notebook actor after watching his comedic skit in the Saturday Night Live show. She mentioned-
“You know those actors you can… just sort of feel that they know what’s funny, and I always felt that about him. And then I’m a big fan of all of his SNLs, I always thought he was great on SNL… He did ‘Guy That Just Got a Boat’ on ‘Weekend Update,’ and it’s so good.”
The Little Women director had written the character of Ken keeping Ryan Gosling in mind. She further went on to explain-
“We actually, in writing it, cast Ryan, like we wrote his name into the script and everything… and [Gosling’s name] was everywhere, 1And then when we handed them the script, the studio was like ‘Oh, it’s so wonderful that you know Ryan.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Ryan. I’ve never met Ryan, I have no idea.'”
Ryan Gosling Addressed Critics Calling Him Too Old To Play Ken
The internet was divided when it was announced that the Drive actor Ryan Gosling, was chosen to play the character of Ken in Greta Gerwig’s directed fantasy-comedy Barbie. The critics pointed out that he was too old to play the role. During an interview with the media outlet GQ, the Oscar-nominated actor addressed the concerns of the critics and claimed that he was way too mature to play the blonde doll opposite Margot Robbie’s Barbie. He said-
“I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with,”
He even mentioned the viral hashtag #notmyken and stated-
“It is funny, this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this? And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it’s like, ‘No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.’ No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f—ed with Ken. That’s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.”
Ryan Gosling was not confident about playing the male Mattel doll in Barbie. All thanks to the great convincing powers of his co-actor-director duo that helped him keep his inhibitions aside and sing, dance, and act in one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023.
Ryan Gosling’s Barbie is currently running in the theatres.
