In the year 2017, Jimmy Fallon lost his number one fan, his mother Gloria Fallon. As a result of which the show was canceled for a week, as Fallon wanted to be with his family and loved ones. Therefore to mark his and the show’s return the executives wanted to do something special, thus Taylor Swift came to the rescue. Jimmy Fallon held back tears as gave out a speech and expressed his gratitude toward his mother, it was already an emotional episode, to begin with. He said,
“It’s good to be back, guys,–As some of you know my mother, Gloria, passed away recently. I cancelled our shows last week to be with my family and make arrangements. She was the best audience, she was the one I was always trying to make laugh, and she was such a fan of the show and everything I did.”
He then proceeded to share an adorable ritual he had with his mother,
“When we were little, my mom would walk us to this store, me and my sister, and she would squeeze my hand three times and say, ‘I love you,’ and I would squeeze back, ‘I love you, too.’”
And then eventually broke down as he shared his experiences from the past week of his life involving his mother’s deteriorating health. The story Fallon shared is what will make a return in Taylor Swift’s song that will ultimately wreck everybody.

Taylor Swift was not even scheduled for the show that day, she was just visiting New York for her appearance in SNL. Thus, the executive of The Tonight Show swooped in and Swift agreed to grace the stage with her presence. DiCenzo says,
“She was not scheduled to do our show today. But we wanted something special for this first show back, so we asked her on a complete whim, since she had been in town doing SNL. She said yes with zero hesitation,”
She took the opportunity to debut her new single New Year’s Day, not for the sake of promotion, but for the special meaning behind a single line of the song, very close to Jimmy Fallon. DiCenzo continued by saying,
“She sang ‘New Year’s Day.’ No one had heard it. Suddenly she sings the line, ‘Squeeze my hand 3 times in the back of the taxi.’ I nearly gasped. Tears. I think everyone in the audience started sobbing. I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance. ‘Hold on to your memories, they will hold on to you,’ Taylor sang.”
