Shōgun is a historical drama series set in Feudal Japan in the late sixteenth century. The show follows John Blackthorne, an English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in the Asian country at a time when the influential warlords are rivaling for power. While adapting himself to the Japanese lifestyle, he becomes close with the ambitious daimyo, Lord Toranaga, and the noblewoman, Lady Mariko.

Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the show is based on James Clavell’s eponymous 1975 novel. This is not the first time the novel has been adapted as it was previously adapted as a miniseries in 1980 by Paramount Television. At the 1981 Emmys, it won 4 out of the 12 awards it was nominated for. It was no less of a cultural phenomenon even back then when it was aired on NBC.

The new adaptation has left the 1980 adaptation far behind in terms of Emmy wins. It won 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmys out of the 16 it was nominated for (via Associated Press). These awards included those for costumes, makeup, editing, stunts, and cinematography. Not to mention the award for the Best Guest Actor in a Drama Emmy for Néstor Carbonell.

Additionally, the show won four more awards at the Primetime Emmy Awards. These were for Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Lead Actress (Anna Sawai), and Best Directing for a Drama Series (Frederick E.O. Toye) for the episode titled Crimson Sky. This huge win is also a major moment for Asian representation and non-English-language television.

While Shōgun was obviously leading the race with a total of 25 nominations at the Emmys, The Bear, another FX series, followed close behind with a total of 23 nominations. The series surpassed the previous record held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009 in the Comedy category.

The Bear won 4 awards out of the 23 it was nominated for. These were for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Series.

Shōgun and The Bear are available for streaming on Hulu.
