“Shut up please”: Michelle Yeoh Threatened to Beat Up a Pianist After They Kept Interrupting Her Speech
Michelle Yeoh’s big moment at the Golden Globes, where she won Best Actress in a Motion Picture was interrupted when the piano started playing during her thank-you speech.
The actress was not impressed by the continuous interruption and stopped her speech to warn the pianist. This situation escalated quickly on social media and denizens were mad at Chloe Flower, the pianist. Good thing, the clarification came quickly afterward.
Michelle Yeoh was Mad at the Golden Globe Pianist
Michelle Yeoh‘s portrayal of the dissatisfied laundromat owner Evelyn Quan Wang in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once won her several accolades including a Golden Globe in the Best Actress category. But when she got on stage to deliver a heartfelt thank-you speech, her big moment was interrupted as the piano started playing when she was not but halfway done.
The piano was there to signal the celebrities to keep their speeches short and wrap things up when they heard it playing. But Yeoh defied the rule, taking her sweet time to thank everyone involved. But as the piano was insistent, Yeoh turned in the pianist’s direction saying:
“Shut up, please. I can beat you up, OK? It’s that serious.”
While people present there saw this in a humorous light, it became a big thing on social media. People were being mean and hostile towards the pianist for her indecent action. However, this reaction was in a situation that could not be farther from the truth.
The Pianist Clears Her Name
Chloe Flower was at the piano for the Golden Globes. She went viral, as viewers assumed, for playing the winners off the stage by interrupting their speeches. Yes, Yeoh wasn’t the only one who was being cut off by the melodious tunes, and neither was the only one to comment on the nuisance.
But in reality, it was not Flower playing when the stars were interrupted. She clarified the situation in an interview with Variety saying:
“My job was to bring everybody back from commercial break with a performance, so I don’t know how that got lost in translation.”
Yeoh was only joking, as Flower recounts the two sharing an embrace, off-camera, after the speech.
“After she won her award, she walked past the piano and I spoke to her. We embraced. We touched and we held hands. I said, ‘I would never disrespect you and play during your speech.’ She was so lovely and nice.”
All confusion was quickly cleared, as Flower gave these statements the day after the award show.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is now streaming on Primevideo.
