When it comes to acting, we can’t expect the actors to always play the role they resonate with the most. Oftentimes, they need to get out of their comfort zones and get their hands muddy in some deeper, darker roles. This is exactly how Cristin Milioti landed the role of Sofia Falcone in the show The Penguin.

The sweet and kind actress is nothing like her character in real life. Sofia is one ruthless badass who is not afraid to unleash her crazy on the world. So how did the Palm Springs actress emulate the fierce character so wonderfully?

Despite playing a massively confident and self-assured character on screen, Cristin Milioti wasn’t so sure that she had knocked it out of the park with her character Sofia Falcone in The Penguin. To emulate the riveting villain, Milioti had to alter her personality entirely and keep her shining presence wrapped in all-black outfits.

When The Penguin first aired, she did not read reviews or go through what people were saying about the show let alone her performance. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Milioti shared,

I didn’t feel that way. I don’t think I ever totally feel that way. I don’t read reviews. I’m too much of a scaredy cat. But I heard a general weather report that people like the show, and that was enough. Then, I stuck my head back in the sand. It’s always very nerve-wracking to share your work with the world.

Such a confession would certainly attract rebuke from her onscreen persona Sofia Falcone. The daughter of Gotham’s mafia boss fears no one and knows her worth. Nevertheless, Milioti always wanted to be a part of a superhero project. But she went one step ahead with The Penguin by being a villainess who could potentially play a larger role in future projects including The Batman 2.

Though Milioti has previously revealed that she auditioned for other superhero movie roles in the past, she is glad to have finally found one that fits her well. After not getting so many roles that she tried for initially, Milioti felt like it wasn’t meant to be. However, as she got older, the actress realized the value of finding roles that she resonated with.

Talking about the opportunity to play a villain in the Batman universe which was her childhood dream, Milioti shared,

I felt like I completely understood her and was obsessed with her from the beginning. And that’s also one of the great things about getting older, is that you start to feel like whatever role you’re meant to find is meant to find you, and it’s all good. Everybody’s on their own path. I am grateful that I didn’t get those jobs because I wouldn’t have necessarily got to play Sofia.

Fans cannot wait to see what Milioti brings to the screen in the upcoming episodes. The limited series has already impressed everyone with just two episodes and set the standard too high. Moreover, Oz and Sofia’s on-screen chemistry has everyone singing their praises.

Starring Colin Farrell as the titular character, The Penguin airs every Sunday on HBO.
