Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) and his arch-nemesis Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) are back in Sonic 3, which has joined the roster of amazing animated movies released this year. Based on the eponymous video game series that was launched over three decades ago, the animated movies about Sonic have been among the most beloved ones for several reasons.
2024 has been quite the year for animated movies with the release of Inside Out 2, Moana 2, The Garfield Movie, and The Wild Robot. Now, the release of Sonic 3 is only making things better as fans are piling into the theaters to witness Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fighting another enemy. Lee Majdoub, who portrays the character of Agent Stone, has recently reflected on an interaction with a fan which proves that this movie series should be continued for as long as possible.
Sonic 3 star Lee Majdoub’s interaction with fans proves that the Sonic movies are more than just entertainment
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in 2020. The movie was directed by Jeff Fowler from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller and followed the story of a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic who runs at supersonic speeds. Sonic teams up with the town sheriff to spoil the evil plans of Dr. Robotnik. The movie was a huge success and a sequel was announced soon after its release.
The second movie, released in 2022, turned out to be just as great in terms of critical and commercial success. A third movie was greenlit even before the second was released, and a spin-off series, Knuckles based on the eponymous character also premiered on Paramount+ earlier this year. The franchise is undoubtedly entertaining, thanks to the great stories and amazing performances.
More than entertainment, the Sonic franchise has become a beacon of hope for actors of diverse ethnicities, exemplified by the representation brought by Agent Stone actor Lee Majdoub. In a recent interview with Collider, the Lebanese-Canadian actor recounted a heartwarming interaction he had with a young fan’s parent.
I had a parent come up to me and tell me when the poster of Agent Stone was revealed for Sonic 2, her kid came up to her and was like, “Mom, he looks like me.” That was a big moment for me in regard to the importance of representation, which I hadn’t really been thinking of with this film, and how much it would mean to so many.
Majdoub also shared a story about meeting a young fan at Ikea. Initially hesitant to approach him, the fan became more comfortable after Majdoub made the first move, eventually bringing his father over to chat and take some pictures. It is moments like these that the actor cherishes. This representation is also an incredible reason for the filmmakers to continue this film series.
Lee Majdoub on his experience of working with Jim Carrey
Known for his comic timing and dramatic chops, Jim Carrey is one of the most legendary actors in Hollywood, and even at the age of 62, he is showing no signs of stopping. When interviewer Steven Weintraub said that he is a huge fan of Carrey, Majdoub fittingly asked, “Aren’t we all?”
Upon being urged to reflect a little on his experience of working with the Bruce Almighty actor, he said:
One of the biggest things I learned from him was watching how specific he is and how meticulous, and how much he cares about the work he does. To be working with him is incredible.
Majdoub further stated that sometimes he really finds it hard to believe that these movies ever happened. Hopefully, this new movie will be as successful as the two previous ones.
Sonic 3 is now in theaters.
