In the ever-evolving realm of superhero blockbusters, few names carry the weight and reverence that James Gunn commands. With a stunning track record at Marvel, having helmed acclaimed films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn was no stranger to gratifying audiences with his unique vision and storytelling prowess.

But it seems that the highly-anticipated fourth MCU movie circled around the beloved titular band of heroes, might not be in the cards as originally hoped. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn reaffirms, in response to a fan on Threads, that he won’t helm a fourth movie focusing on the titular team. The fate of Guardians of the Galaxy 4 remains uncertain:

Q: “’Guardians 3′ is the best Marvel movie so far…do 4!!! PLEASE!!!”

Gunn: “I think I’ll leave it at 3, sorry (but thank you)”

In a May 2023 interview with Esquire Middle East, James Gunn emphasized the possibility of a fourth movie in the Guardians franchise but clarified it won’t be titled Vol. 4:

“I don’t think there will ever be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4.’ There are many reasons this group will not be back. There could be more ‘Guardians’ movies, but it won’t be with this group.”

The Director also said:

“I think as long as somebody brings themselves to it, and doesn’t just try to copy that style—I think it can be really amazing. And there are so many directors I would like to do that. And I would love to see it happen.”

Expressing his stance further, the Marvel filmmaker added that he would wholeheartedly endorse a fourth movie, given that a new director injects their unique vision and creativity into the project.

Gunn’s unique style of storytelling united with his ability to blend humor, emotion, and action, has contributed to the success and popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Breaking the news on Twitter, James Gunn, and the Head Boss of DCU disclosed the official end date of his tenure at Marvel Studios:

“As was made clear in all press, until May, I am both DC & Marvel. I’ve dedicated the majority of the past 10 years of my life to the Guardians trilogy, & I’m not abandoning them or the thousands of people who worked on them at the 11th hour. The world won’t end if you love both.”

Unexpectedly, there were some fans who reacted with anger towards Gunn for being associated with both Marvel and DCU, which seemed rather ridiculous to many observers. Ultimately, fans’ perspectives will vary based on their individual connections to Gunn’s work and their preferences for either Marvel or DC characters. It’s not uncommon for fans to feel a mix of emotions when filmmakers they admire make significant career moves like this.

Frequently asked questions

Is James Gunn directing Guardians of the Galaxy 4?

No. Replying to a fan on Threads who begged him to make a fourth film, Gunn said, "I think I’ll leave it at 3, sorry (but thank you)." Having directed the Guardians trilogy, he has moved on to co-lead DC Studios (the DCU), so he is not planning to helm a fourth Guardians movie himself.

Could there still be a Guardians of the Galaxy 4 without Gunn?

Possibly. In a May 2023 Esquire Middle East interview, Gunn said there won’t be a movie titled "Vol. 4" and that this particular team won’t return, but he added there "could be more Guardians movies" with a different director. He said he would wholeheartedly support a fourth film if a new director brought their own vision rather than copying his style. No such project has been confirmed.

Was James Gunn working for both Marvel and DC at the same time?

Yes, during a transition period. Gunn explained on social media that, as stated in press, he was "both DC & Marvel" until May, saying he wasn’t abandoning the Guardians team at the "11th hour" after dedicating roughly the past decade to the trilogy. He has since moved fully into steering the DCU at DC Studios.
