Stanley Tucci considers his role in Captain America: The First Avenger disturbing

Recently, Stanley Tucci sat down for an interview with Variety regarding his latest release Conclave, and his Oscar nomination. He talked about his career graph, and stated how he has been balancing his filmography between big-budgeted movies like Captain America: The First Avenger and small independent films like Supernova.

Reflecting on his time as Abraham Erskine in the Marvel film, he said,

I loved Captain America: The First Avenger, it was one of the greatest roles and jobs I’ve ever had. I was there for three weeks and had a wonderful time, and I also loved playing that character.

But, there’s a catch to it. Although he believes the film is one of the greatest projects of his career, Tucci considers it disturbing for a reason. Explaining what mattered to him, the actor jokingly shared,

I was cast as a 70-year-old man at the age of 50, so that was disturbing, but that’s all right; I was flattered and insulted at the same time… You have to mix it up, as they say.

Well, it seems Tucci didn’t want to play a role 20 years older than his actual age. However, the Devil Wears Prada actor later reprised his role as an alternate Erskine in MCU’s animated series What If…?, where events get played out differently than in the live-action movies.

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Abraham Erskine was a scientist who originally formulated the Super Soldier Serum. After joining the Strategic Scientific Reserve, he modified his serum and chose Steve Rogers to be its recipient. Stanley Tucci said yes to the role because he wanted a character that would let him use a German accent.

The movie had grossed $370 million worldwide against a budget of $14 million, as per Box Office Mojo. Tucci was even nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor in the MCU flick.

Now, the actor is gaining all the praise for his performance in the papal thriller, Conclave. He plays Cardinal Aldo Bellini alongside Ralph Fiennes’ Cardinal Thomas Lawrence. He will be next seen in the Netflix upcoming movie The Electric State featuring Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, and others. It will be directed by the Russo brothers – Anthony and Joe Russo.
