He further explained-

“I was getting a chance to take a lap with everybody. And the way those last two episodes were structured, it felt very rich to me to simultaneously be saying goodbye as Michael and us as friends in this moment of work together. But, yeah, it was a lot, it was a very emotional thing.”

Steve Carell On Understanding The Character Of Michael Scott

In the oral history of The Office Welcome To The Dunder Millfin, by Brian Baumgartner, and executive producer Ben Silverman the writers, cast, and crew members have reflected on the show, the characters, and how they felt when they took an exit from the series.

The Crazy, Stupid, Love actor Steve Carell spoke about his character Michael Scott, his understanding of the moody boss, and what helped him to essay it so effortlessly. He said-

“It’s why I bristle a little when people try to compartmentalize Michael as a racist. He’s a person with an enormously good, kind heart who lacked a great deal of information about the world around him. He was as asleep in a woke world as you could be,”

He even mentioned-

“[Michael’s] trying his best! There’s a difference between being intolerant and being ignorant. Sometimes intolerance and ignorance go hand in hand, for sure. But I think he was a very earnest and decent human being. He just didn’t… get it all the time, you know?”

While talking about what he always looks inside a character that he plays, the American actor said-

“I think you have to, because otherwise you’re just demonizing or judging them. And if you’re doing that, you’ll play it differently. You don’t want to editorialize about them.”

The Office revolves around a group of office workers who go through hilarious misadventures at the Pennsylvanian branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The first episode was aired in 2005 and the rest is history. After completing nine years, the show came its final run in May 2013.

The Office is currently available on Netflix.
